Vila Velha Natural Park

by albert34

Apart from the very known Iguassu Falls there are more interesting places to visit in Parana.I went to the Vila Velha State Park taking a bus from the town of Ponta Grossa, although is better from Curitiba in spite of being more distant.(say the driver to stop there before). This is a surprising ladscape not very known of foreigners and it is worth going there. You don't need to walk a lot because there are a good internal transport. On the other hand it is compulsory to use it.

the old Village, but is not a village at all. just 80km northwest from Curitiba, I looked it up ....and 20 km from Ponte Grossa. Vila Velha is a National Park, with limestone sculptures and hundreds of caves ( furnas ). and as I remember, a very hot place in the summer.some of the Limestone Sculptures are over 30m high and very impressiv, like .. Golden Pond.Vila Velha is actually on the way to the Foz, so take a little detour and visit the National Park

Ilha do Mel

Just off the coast of Paranagua (down near Curitiba) is Honey Island. An great little island that is basically a place that time has forgot. There are a few places to stay....no cars....lots of sand and lots of great beaches. Want to get away from it all while you are in Brazil -- head to Ilha do Mel. Take the train down from Curitiba (tourist train through the mountains, very nice, but touristy) or a bus down to the coast to catch the ferries.
