When in Gramado try walking. Start your route at the small Lago (lake) Joaquina Bier and go down the tree lined streets on your way to the larger "Lago Negro" (Black Lake). Keep a little map in hand (you can obtain one at the tourist center at the main square, across from the Catholic Church) and try to get somewhat lost in your way to the big lake. You will find unexpected little streets and beautiful trails. Depending on the season, the sidewalks will be almost covered by hydringeas, azelias or other colorful flowers. Check for the different kinds of pines and specially for the araucharia pine that you will only see in this region of Brazil.

Gramado Transportation

You can take a van or a taxi to go from Gramado to the international airport in Porto Alegre - POA, 110 kms. However, paying four to eight times less you can take a bus at the Gramado road station (rodovi√°ria) that will drop you at the airport. The buses are very comfy, airconditioned (see one in the picture) and the ride takes from 1h:45 to 2h:00, just 15 minutes more than a van or taxi. Not all buses stop over at the airport so you should ask (or have your hotel asking) for the airport bus schedule. If the airport bus schedule is not convenient for your flight, you can try any "executivo" bus that goes straight to the Porto Alegre bus station and from there take a taxi to the airport (10 minutes ride). It will still be a good deal when compared to what vans and taxis charge from Gramado to POA.
For the bus company serving Gramado check: www.citral.tur.br
I was informed that the company is trying to arrange for buses to stop over at the airport in their way from Porto Alegre (bus station) to Gramado, but it has not, so far (July, 2008), obtained the authorization from the State Road and Transportation Authority (DAER) to do so. I will keep you informed on when you will be able to ride the bus directly from POA to Gramado, instead of having to go from POA to the Porto Alegre main bus station in order to take the bus to Gramado there.
Bus ride from Gramado to POA or to Porto Alegre main bus station costs R$22,50/US$14.25 (July, 2008).
Taxi ride from POA to Porto Alegre main bus station R$15,00/US$9.00 (July, 2008)

Favorite thing: The best internet site with information and all kinds of data about Gramado is www.gramadosite.com.br
The main problem, however, is that it is totally in Portuguese which may be a problem for some people. If you can read Spanish you will be able to catch most of its information and easily navigate in the site.
