North of Porto Alegre is the Serra do Geral, a range of Mountains and Hills, populated mainly by the descendants of german and italien Immigrants.the Germans settled in RGS from 1824-1859, when times where tough in their Homeland, they spread out on the flater lowlands, establishing small farming communities, around Nova Petropolis..still in these days strong elements of german originsthe Italians arrived 1875 -1915 and settled more in the hilly parts around Caixias do Sul, being from the Hills of Veneto and Trentino, they adapted well and specialised in Wine Production. Caixias do Sul became the administrative and industrial Center.but the smaller Towns ..like Bento Concalves and Garibaldi are the Region of great brasilian Wine production.
The Gramado Film Festival

Held every year in Gramado during August, this is the Cannes of Latin America. The festival has a duration of six days a the film sessions at the Palace Festivals. The event brings a lot of famous people to the city among actors, actresses, directors, technicians and, of course, tourists. All interested in the competition that exhibits hundreds of films. There are two categories awards: Brazilian films and Latin America, Portugueses & Spanish films.
