It all depends on what kind of nightlife activity you want. I particularly like going to parties and pubs.
One place that I recommend to dance is Manara. I particularly like Sunday evenings, when you can listen and dance to forró.
If you like some blues and jazz, you have to go to Music Hall. It's a kind of pub, where you can listen to great live music. Two nights a month they have Jam Conversation Night, when you can speak some English.
Girls: If you want to dance some forró, it's not a good idea to wear long and/or tight skirts. It's not confortable to dance. A good pair of trousers is the best choice.

Porto Alegre has a lot of places to go out on the night. The best places in my opinion are the discos Dado Bier, Manara, Venezza, the bars on the Goethe Avenue. These are the most special places to me. Leave a Comment Theme: Live Music

Any of the small bars in 'Republica' street in Cidade Baixa neighborhood are great. There's no Guinness here though.
If you'd like to meet other travellers, ex-pats or someone who you can speak English to, go to 'Start Talking Café'
'Start Talking', is run by Armÿn, a Dutch friend of mine and is specifically for Brazilian students who want to practice English, ex-pats to meet up and chat in English or travellers to meet people. The talk and atmosphere is all English, it's not really a 'pub' , but has a great atmosphere. AND, WAIT FOR IT!! - YES! HE HAS GUINNESS! Only in cans though, but with a pint glass and the 'draught flow' system, you can pretend. Oh - has great food too - bagels with a choice of fillings.

"Calçada da Fama" is the popular name given to a street in POA full of bars and pubs. In the evening, it gets crowded with the most beautiful people in town, and also the most expensive cars! Posh people go there frequently, and it's a nice place to have a beer talking with friends.
