A day trip to Gramado / Canela has been mentioned before I think.
Also maybe a trip to the south of the city - Ipanema, for a nice sunset walk, or a bit further - Lami, about 30km south of the centre, also for a nice sunset walk, a little less crowded.

As it is a long drive from PA or gramado/Canela area, most visitors to Rio Grande do Sul avoid visiting the missions in the north, although the well preserved mission in Sao Miquel is a known spot.
Indeed, going there to see just Sao Miquel is not worthwhile the effort, but you can (a) cross the border and visit similar missions in Argentina and Paraguay, or (b) head to Palmyra, see the local gaucho tea production and go from there to a national park.
When I was in Palmyra, I luckily could see a local gaucho event;unfortunately, they only do it from time to time, so don't count on it.

Apart form visiting the typical places in the town, you can go to Gramado and Caracol´s Park in Canela .
Gramado is a german village in Brazil. One person who does not whre he is, would think he´s at Tirol or something similar. Very surprising.
And Caracol´s Waterfall is worthy because the landscape is very nice. This waterfall is quite high, nothing to envy from the height of Iguazu waterfalls.

The Praça Shiga is a not common touristic route in Porto Alegre, but I can assure that it is a wonderful place to go and have fun. You can do a picnic and see all the beautifulness of this place.

Canela City:About two hours from Porto Alegre(by car). Swiss chalets, apfelstrudel, and even snow, are some of the features of quiet, but intense Canela.

In Porto Alegre you can dance some Forró. This is a tipycal dance of northeastern Brazil. People have a lot of fun! It's on all Sunday evenings, at Manara.
