BOAT TRIP,MY FAVOURITE!!
Go to Porto Alegre Port and take one of the boats:you can make a trip with in a boat for groups or,if you or any of your friends have a skipper license, you can take your own boat, together with the maps for your safety and comfort.
My friends from Boston visited us last June, and as one of them,Kevin, had a skipper license,we had our own boat,it was fantastic to see the city from the river!A brand new way of looking at the city, the trip took us a whole day,as we wanted to see the sunset on the boat!

SOME FACTS ABOUT..(OK) "GUAIBA LAKE "
On its banks (72km) around the city, people come to admire the famous Porto Alegre sunset, winter and summer.
It's the main meeting point for sundays,as anyway, after saturday parties, nobody wakes up before afternoon, than that's the way we meet to talk about last night funs!!

" DA PINTADA " ISLE
It's one of the attractions when you take the boat, many years ago,the inhabitants of this isle supplied fishes, vegetables and milk for the city.
Today, you can find here very fancy millionaires houses side by side with the poverty of the natives!

MAKE A TRIP AND DONATE
If you take the boat trip organised by the municipality of Porto A legre, they will take you
to " Pintada " isle and the other isles around, from the City Port, and the price will be a donation,a package of food for the natives (yes, that's the situation!).
An extra of 10 reais will be paid for those who wants to join this trip on board of the famous "Cisne Branco "(white swan),because the boat is a bit more fancy.

THE LAKE IS A " HOUSE " FOR MANY RIVERS!!
Lake Guaiba receives the water of Jacui River ,Cai River,Sinos River and Gravatai River.
In the isles created by this complex, was created,in 1976,the "Delta Do Jacui " National Park, with 28 isles (most isolated ),with a special unique fauna & flora!
Some isles are connected to the city by the bridge, some, only by boat!

meeting with Mercedes, indegeous chief
driving along the guaiba through a very rich neighbourhood (sort of Beverly Hills) and suddenly there was this indegeous people village of plastic houses
i was speakless of the contrast
Mercedes is the chief.
I asked her how she became chief.
When the chief dies a new chief is appointed.
Her grandmother was chief and made her the new chief when she died.
Discover the Mercado Publico
The city public market is a nice place to buy cheap food and regional products, like as chimarrao herb and other 'gauchos' stuff. You can also find the best fishes and meat.
On the sunset, the restaurants located on the top floor of the market are a good choose to listen live music and taste the Rio Grande do Sul culinary
Dificult to call Guaiba " Lake Guaiba ",after growing up with the idea it was a river!
But,it's a lake!!
Its waters meet the Atlantic in Rio Grande, the last south point of this state.

A day trip to Gramado / Canela...
A day trip to Gramado / Canela has been mentioned before I think.
Also maybe a trip to the south of the city - Ipanema, for a nice sunset walk, or a bit further - Lami, about 30km south of the centre, also for a nice sunset walk, a little less crowded.
Apart form visiting the...
Apart form visiting the typical places in the town, you can go to Gramado and Caracol´s Park in Canela .
Gramado is a german village in Brazil. One person who does not whre he is, would think he´s at Tirol or something similar. Very surprising.
And Caracol´s Waterfall is worthy because the landscape is very nice. This waterfall is quite high, nothing to envy from the height of Iguazu waterfalls.
not that far
ca. 100km from Porto Alegre, via Novo Hamburgo, change the Bus, gong into Morro Reuter, pass Dois Irmaos and travelling up the Hills to Santa Maria do Herval, have you Lunch there among Countryfolks. and around 2-3km you find a quite undisturbed native Bushland with a little comfort..Camping at its best!
Sao Miguel das Missoes.
Sao Miguel das Missoes.. like those Missoes at Paraguay and Argentina..
not far from Santo Angelo and Sao Luiz Conzaga, have a look at the map from Rio Grande do Sul
I must admit it is a long drive but worth to explore
