This place rents what it calls a 'house." It is not a house. It is 2 squalid apartments, called "casa 1" and "casa 2." What a disappointment when you arrive!
Fun Alternatives: We think the best thing to do is stay at a pousada (bed and breakfast place), then look for a place you really like.

The principal village of Ilha Grande is an overcrowded mess. It is loud, overpopulated, and the water is poluted from two open sewage creeks that leak into the bay.
It is especially overcrowded during the months of Decmeber - March where the local population triples and the infistructure of the island cannot hold the impact. You will get frequent power outages and running water runs out at times.
Unique Suggestions: Go in the low season which is between April and November. Walk to Lpes Mendes or Dois Rios Beach to get away from Abraao.
Fun Alternatives: Bananal is nice, as is Pouso Beach or Saco do Ceo. Very isloated yet no hassles and cleaner environment.

There is an internet cafe that has high speed access and whose screen savers are breathtaking photographs from the ilha grande website (www.ilhagrande.com). You can get stuck here for hours looking at all of the places that you want to see while you are here. Make sure that you check the site before you leave for the day and know what you want to see when you get there!

Many tour boats make a stop at the Freguesia de Santana, the oldest church on the island. Unless you are a church enthusiast, you can avoid it. You cannot go inside and it is essentially an old white building on a hill. The beach where the boat docks is decent, so it is not bad is you want to take a swim but if another beach is a possibility, avoid the church.
