Ilha Grande Things to Do

  • Ruinas do Lazareto

The island was not always a tropical paradise. Due to its isolation, strong ocean currents and relatively harsh living conditions, it has always been a destination for those looking for privacy. Slavery traders used the remote beaches as auction stages, society also outcasted the ill and exiled the criminals here. The Ruinas do Lazareto are physical...

  • About the tours offered in Abrao

I didn't like it at all. Bad service, I recommend renting a boat (with motor) with more people and tell them to take you to the venues. You can rent the snorkelling equipment at the Quay. The thing that I do recommend is taking the boat to Lopes Mendes I took the trekking to the beach and it was quite exhausting just one way.

  • Lopes Mendes Beach, Heaven on Earth

My friend and I were a little intimidated by the stories of Lopes Mendes Praia. A surfer's paradise, to us, meant rough surf and strong currents, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that it was in fact the most beautiful beach that either of us had ever seen. After some deliberation, we decided that it was the most heavenly place that either...

Ilha Grande Restaurants

  • Floating Restaurant in Paradise

This unique restaurant is floating off the beach. Unless you want to get wet and swim out there, simply flag them down and a small boat (yellow one in the photo) will come via a cable to the beach to pick you up and drop you off.The food is alright and the drinks are cold, but you are definately visiting for the ambiance and charm. They do not...

  • The typical nights

During the day, my traveling companions on this trip (an American and Paraguayan) and I busied ourselves with walking the trails, visiting the beaches and swimming in the cool waters. However at night, our plans usually consisted of drinking at random places along the streets and eating copious amounts of seafood. It is a small and friendly place so...

Ilha Grande Transportation

  • Speed Connection - not recommended

getting to rio from ilha grande with one of the boats and the public bus can be quite strenuous, so we decided to use the resta 1 speed connection. it combines the boat ride to conceicao de jacarei (45min compared to approx. 90min to angra dos reis) with a shared transfer including drop-off in your rio hotel/hostel/airport. sounds like a great...

Ilha Grande Tourist Traps

  • pousada ouro verde fake

This place rents what it calls a 'house." It is not a house. It is 2 squalid apartments, called "casa 1" and "casa 2." What a disappointment when you arrive! We think the best thing to do is stay at a pousada (bed and breakfast place), then look for a place you really like.
