Cantareira: Live music and outdoor hangout

by DSwede Updated Jul 30, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

While it may be located in a bit more low cost part of town, it is close to the UFF (university), so there are always people around except when it is raining.

The area locally known as "Cantareira" is a small square plaza with a number of restaurants and bars on all sides. For example on Tuesdays, one has live samba music. On Fridays, others have typical rock music. They offer live music almost every day.

Many of the venues have standard bar-type foods and pizzas. Prices are typically lower than other neighborhoods in Niteroi. But for those who want to keep their budget even lower, there are several people always selling from carts on the street.

Dress Code: Dress code is casual. Dress appropriate for the heat and dancing if you care to do so.

Bar do Turco: Local's place for good drinks and music

by DSwede Updated Jul 29, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Bar do Turco is truly a local Niteroi bar. Even many people in Niteroi don't know it exists, or know where it is. It is on a quiet residential street, tucked between a couple quiet homes.

But for those that know about it, it is a favorite spot. And those that know and enjoy music keep coming back for more.

The bar is open until 2 or 3am depending on the night, or maybe later if the crowd is lively. The walls are decorated with lots of graffiti, artwork, posters, people's quotes, etc. The small venue has regular live music Thursday, Friday and Saturday. When not playing live music, the place has an wide variety of music on their play lists. It tends to be more rock, alternative, jazz, blues or any combination thereof.

They have a fairly expansive drink menu, which appears to grow over time as they paste/tape more and more into the unfolding menu. They also have a few appetizers and snacks to eat too for those late night munchies.

Dress Code: Dress code is completely casual. Seating is outdoors, but under a covered roof, so dress for the weather.

Emporio de Icarai: Best Beer Selection in Town

by DSwede Written Jul 24, 2012

While Icarai (or Niteroi in general) tends to be a bit expensive, this bar is no different. The general prices are a little more than normal, but what you are paying for is the best beer selection and knowledge in the city. The Emporio regularly has more than 200 beers available from all over the world. This is a rarity in Brazil, particularly outside of the main tourist areas. They do have some food on the menu, but it is snack type foods.

Dress Code: The dress code is casual, but you will find that most people who come here are business men after work. But if you show up in shorts and sandals, you'll still fit right in. Dress for the weather because the bar has ~8 tables outside on the sidewalk.

    BemDito: Burgers, Steaks and Sports

by DSwede Written Feb 7, 2012

    BemDito

DemDito is a casual sit-down bar with good steaks, burgers and large TV's. There are a few tables inside, but most are either on the street sidewalk, or on an upstairs balcony.

The food is good quality. The burgers are tasty and the Philly Cheese Steak is recommended. The drink menu is fairly large too. The prices are reasonable, but not cheap, after all it is along the beach in a popular area.

The bar always has the big games, whether it is Brazilian league football, European leagues, etc. They also show rugby and as far as I know, they are the only place in the area that will show the US Superbowl.

Dress Code: Dress code is completely casual. Dress for the weather since most tables are outside.
