Parati is a very small town but has many churches and chapels. Wondering around Parati's historic center you will come across many of them.

Here are some of the churches you will find:

    - Rosario and Sao Benedito Church
    - Santa Rita Church
    - Matriz Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remedios
    - Nossa Senhora das Dores Chapel
    - Nossa Senhora da Penha Church
    - Generosa Chapel

The Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remedios is one of the most important and the Church of Santa Rita is Parati's postcard.

There are so many wonderful beaches around Parati I can only name a few!

Cachadaço Beach - A natural pool formed by volcanic rocks. You can swim among multi-colored fish, and snorkeling is a must to best appreciate the underwater variety of sea life. Access by boat or by trail.

Vermelha Beach - A wonderful bay surrounded by lush greenery and with turquoise waters.

Cepilho Beach - With huge rocks in the middle of the beach.

There are many more, you just have to hop around or drive with a good map in hands to discover these excellent unspoiled and almost desert beaches!

  • This is also a "obligatory" tour in Paraty. The charming fishermen village of Trindade has a rich history to tell, besides 7 fantastic beaches.
Brava Beach: Wild beach with an access by a trail from the road to Trindade.
Cepilho Beach: Surfers beach with access by car, with bar and parking lot
Fora beach or Ranchos beach: Huge beach that bounds the village. Has many bars with delicacies and drinks.
Meio Beach: One of Paraty's postcard. Small beach, normally with calm waters and few bars.
Cachadaýo Beach: reachable by trail. Huge beach with some camping areas without electricity. Be careful with holes and tides. Lifeguard presence.
Figueira Beach or Pelados Beach: So called for the practice of nudism in the beach. Reachable by trails. Small beach.
Cachadaýo: Marvelous place. Huge rock formations create a natural pool with seawater. A real natural aquarium where you can swim near the fish. Reachable by trails.

  • The Paraty Bay, with its still wild beaches and islands, is one of the most beautiful places in the Brazilian coastline. Its clear and calm waters, full of colorful fishes are an invitation for a good dive that you cannot refuse. Doubtless, this is a tour that pleases everyone, from all ages and styles. From big schooners to small trawlboats, there are many options to enjoy Paraty. Diving and fishing are common activities among the tourists.

The tours last about 4-5 hours, with daily leave from the pier.
price is around R$20,00 per person

    Cruise by Paraty Bay

  • This is a budget cruise (20 reais per person) that really worths! Between 10 and 11 a.m., from the pier close to Santa Rita Church, the baleeiras, escunas and yachts leave following an itinerary that changes from day to day, but that is always beautiful. It includes a visit to the islands, to beaches (usually Praia Vermelha) and a stop among ornamental fishes; you can dive among them, with snorkels (of couse there are specialized cruises, where you can dive properly with specific equipment, that you can rent close to the pier). In the end (at about 5 p.m.), you swam a lot, took a lot of sun, relaxed... it's ALL GOOD!

Trindade - or Trinidad in Portuguese - is a must see beach town 30 minutes from Parati. There are several beaches to visit in this area - some with calm waters for swimming, others with waves for surfing. In addition to the beautiful beaches, there is a natural swimming pool closeby. It's called Caxa d'Aco. You can hire a boat for $5 and it will take you directly to the natural pool in minutes. Several boats line the beach. Or you can hike over a mountain (this will take you about 30 mins.) to get to the natural pool for free. Once you get to the natural pool you can rent snorkelling equipment and buy a caipirinha from a vendor set up on the rocks. This natural pool is one of the most amazing sites I've even visited. The pool is created by giant boulder rocks that enclose a small swimming area. You can swim in the "pool" or sunbathe on one of the smooth rocks.

    Parati from the waterfront

This photo was taken from the main pier, and is the classic view of Parati. It shows the church of Santa Rita set against a background of lush green hills.

The church, the oldest in Parati, was built by freed slaves in 1722 and despite its plain exterior, displays some fine rococo artwork. It also houses the small Museum of Sacred Art (Wed-Sun 10am-noon and 2-5pm; R$4/US$1.65), which is worth a visit, though it wasn’t open when we were there. A shame, as it apparently holds a superb 18th-century terracotta pietà. This image was stolen from the Nossa Senhora do Rosário church in Parati several years ago and later recovered from a junk shop in Rio.

The building just to the left of the church was once the town jail and is all that remains of the former Forte Patitiba, a fort built in the city for defense of the harbour. Now it is home to the city library and historic institute.

Paraty's Casa da Cultura (House of Culture) is perfect place to start your visit of Paraty and learn more about its culture and history. One would not expect to find such an excellent, high tech museum as this while walking in the historic town of Paraty.

Casa da Cultura occupies a historic 18th century house which opened to the public in 2004. It holds a permanent exhibition on local history and culture. The collection presents all kind of items from the daily life of the residents of Paraty. Especially interesting is Salon of Indigenous Culture.

This museum celebrates the history and people of Paraty with audio and video clips, photography, maps and other documents. There are more than 140 photographs and numerous video screens that give a very realistic view of ordinary life there.

Casa da Cultura also has a 170 seat auditorium, temporary exhibition room, bookshop, cafe and shop that sells local arts and crafts, works made by Paraty most famous artists.

    It is open Thurs-Mon 10am-6:30pm

Visiting churches in Paraty is travelling through the history of Colonial Brazil and Igreja de Santa Rita is the oldest and architecturally most significant. It once served as the main church until the Matriz was built. Completed in 1722, it was the church of freemen, former slaves who earned or payed for their liberty.

The structure is notable for its elaborate facade done in Portuguese Baroque style. It's a typical Jesuit church with a tower and three front windows. The old catacombs used to be right next to the church.

Today it houses a small religious art museum Museo de Arte Sacra that holds some antique furniture and many important pieces in wood and terracota. The image of Sao Sebasiao from the 17th century, silver candle holders, gold crowns and other valuable objects are on display at the vault.

    It is open Wed-Sun 9am-noon and 2-5pm

The first and most famous attraction in Paraty is the Centro Historico, a historical monument with its architecture from Brazil's colonial period. Today the centre is well-preserved tourist area, filled with good restaurants, bars, shops with local handicrafts, galleries and churches. It is usually full of street vendors, artists and performing groups. The main praca (square) features the town's principal church and many sidewalk cafes.

Paraty is a perfect place simply to wander around without any particular plan. Each turn of the corner brings another picturesque view. You can walk the cobblestone streets of Paraty hours an hours admiring the details of all those colourful and centuries-old buildings. It will certainly give you the greatest enjoyment :)

Be sure to wear good walking shoes as the stone streets are sometimes not so easy to navigate.
