A notable (but not fond) memoury: leaving Brazil
  • Tip Rating:
  • At 7.30, we left Neila's flat. Ivan, Fernanda, and the lot stayed. All of the sudden, Flávia got a cell phone call from her sisters asking her to meet them at 8.30 for something "very important". Let's stop and think here. Barra Tijuca was on the opposite side of Rio de Janeiro from Petrópolis, about 60 miles (100 km.) away. Even without having to drop me off at the airport, it would have been TOUCH AND GO (a close call). Even though it was mathematically impossible, Alexandre obeyed her wishes. However, there was a traffic jam in Rio that made her meeting absolutely impossible and my making my plane in time questionable. What a bloody shame it would have been if I had one more day to "put up with" the warm weather in Brazil. Then Alexandre missed the turnoff to the airport. We finally got to the airport at 9.21, in plenty of time to catch by 11.50 flight. We got there and the queues were interminable. They were bad enough going to Los Angeles and Miami, but they were even worse in Frankfurt. I promise y'all that if I were going to Frankfurt, I would have just taken the next day's flight out- I would not have gotten in THAT queue. As it was, the queue for the flight to Miami was long. Saying goodbye is always the hardest part of a trip.

Ivan's sister Neila invited us to her flat across the road from the beach on the 17th floor of Residencial Praia da Barra on the 3500 block of Avenida Sernambetiba. You should have seen the 9 of us- Neila, Ivan, Fernanda, Bernardo, Gustavo, Marcela, Alexandre, Flávia, and me- trying to fit in the lift. If any of us had one more piece of bread that morning, it wouldn't have been possible. Neila cooked a 4-cheese pasta, cold cuts, and rice. Absent Guaraná, I had water. Most everybody took a shower before supper. I tried to get one early, but somebody always beat me out. Since there were 9 of us, I took my shower AFTER supper. I felt a lot better after washing away most of the sand and suntan oil.

    A day at the beach

The next stop was the beach at Barra Tijuca (which turns out to be my friend Dan DeCasrilevitz's birthplace), a good ways south of downtown. I was ready for the beach and I had my flip-flops and suntan oil in a separate bag. The water was warm, but full of rubbish from the New Year's celebration.

I put on some number 45 sun block while thinking about the cold weather back home. Since this was the last time I would see warm weather until the following spring, so I decided I would make the most of every minute on the beach and the warm water. Furthermore, since it was late afternoon, it wasn't so hot. I was in less danger of a sunburn and I didn't need my flip-flops, which fit about like those special sandals I had to wear at the Imperial Museum. Seeing me cross the road to the beach in those flip-flops that were a little too small for my feet even though they were the biggest in the store was a site to behold.

    Paradise is here

My hobby is to travel. I got to travel for more than 60 cities around the world. From China to Alaska The is not any city in the world dazzled me more than Rio de Janeiro. The city is the paradise in the earth. I would have to write a book to count everything of beautiful that I saw in this city, but I can summarize in only one word: Happiness, Happiness and Happiness. The Scenery begins with beautiful blue beaches being in turn of tropical mountains where you can enjoy the purest green of the mountains drinking an immense variety of natural juices that only exists here and observing beautiful women in sculptural bodies. If only that was enough, it would be great. But the city offers much more, it is the most cheerful people of the world, here there is not difference of blacks, whites, Yelows or Catholics, Jews and Muslims do not exist they are all cariocas (residents of the Rio de Janeiro) and carioca is the people that won the title of more cordial of the world. You do not constrained to asking information, here it is the largest pleasure to give and to receive information (they take you in the door if it possible). Do you want culture? here it is the cradle of the bossa nova (kind of Jazz), of the music Girl from Ipanema (Jobim song), it Dances the samba, the colourfoul Carnival Parade, The largest theater of the Latin america and also has the largest library of the Latin america (National Library), the largest (number of people) New years' eve of the world.

Restaurants??? One of the largest restaurants of the Latin america. Everything for a price infinitely inferior to the of Europe or of the United States. Have you thought to have a complete dinner in on the most famous hotels of the world (Copacabana Palace), with a cukery thankfully international paying about 25 dollars. Only in Rio, my friend.. But I think the best is not Copacabana Palace French restaurant, better same it is the Rotisserie (Churrascaria), a restaurant type with a fixed price that you can eat the whole meat type to 10 dollars or less. Only in my Rio friend... Sports??? It is the city of Maracana (larger stadium of the world). That is the city that was born for the sports. Here...beautiful bodies are rules and non exception. When you arrive of airplane from Europe and it is going from the airport to Ipanema or Copacabana you will see beautiful people walking around, running, bicycles, people playing volleyball, wing delta, seems until an Olympics. That has explanation: CLIMATE, is good most of the year.
Night in Rio? Hundreds of bars, dance clubs for all the tastes and styles. I recommend the dance club in the top of the hill of the urca, with your blinding view. Shopping? What such the 5th greatest shopping of the world? May I say some words ? Visit the Ipanema hippie fair, a famous fair where everything is good, beautiful and cheaply. I don't need to speak a lot of Cristo Redentor, Urca Hill, Sugar Loaf Hill (cable car) and Botanical Garden. There are lot of information about that on Internet. Visit Rio, you won't be sorry, Rio is famous for doing that they call "travelers' of the house" that means people that after one time visiting, the visit every years that city that received the title of Wonderful City.

    Pâo de Açúcar
  • Tip Rating:
  • Pâo de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf) is the hill situated close to Guanabara Bay; you can go up to the top in a cable-car. From the top you will have the most spectacular sight of Rio.

Pâo de Açúcar es la colina situada junto a la Bahía de Guanabara; se puede subir hasta la cima en un teleférico. Desde la cima se disfruta la más espectacular vista de Río.

As much as I know,Gauchos have a lot of jokes about Cariocas and the oposite even more!
Cariocas are very proud of their famous girls and beaches and their easy lifestyle..they used to say Gauchos have nothing to do in the weekends besides going to the airport area and park their cars near it, watching for hours the airplanes landing and taking off!!
Gauchos say the beaches in Rio are poluted and Cariocas men know only a long blablabla but action is zero(lol),but,I believe both love and respect each other after all,we are at the same land!!
As a mix of both,I suffer from listening both sides jokes and feel a little embarassed to fall in a deep laugh everytime!!
Now,I will put you at the map, telling you some historical facts about Rio:Rio De Janeiro city is located in the Rio De Janeiro State, south east of Brazil.
It's bounded at the East by the Guanabara Bay,on the West and North by forested mountains and on the South by a long beach area.
Its population is estimated in 5.750.000 inhabitants.
Rio is the owner of a magnificient beauty, offering its inhabitants and visitors an unique landscape!Nature perfect matches the seaside with the mountains creating a remarkable view! That's one of reasons why it's called by Brazilians citizens the "Wonderful City".

    CLIMATE
  • Tip Rating:
  • Climate is generally tropic, hot, and humid, but because of its geographic location, the city is reached often, specially during autumn and winter,by cold fronts advancing from the Antartic, which cause frequent weather changes. But it's mostly during summer(December to March)that strong showers occur. The mountainous areas register greater rainfall since they constitute a barrier to the humid wind that comes from the Atlantic. The temperature varies according to altitute, distance from the coast,vegetation,etc..Winter(June to September)is very pleasant, with mild temperatures and,in general, less rainy than summer.
The average temperature is around 23c,and in the summer can be around 40c!!

    GIRLS,BIKINIS,BEACHES,ACTION-SOUTH ZONE!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Copacababna,Flamengo,Botafogo,Ipanema
    Leblon,Sao Conrado,Gavea,Jardim Botanico,
Lagoa and Barra Da Tijuca are the main districts in the South Zone,or,in other words:
where, probably, you'll find yourself most of your trip!!
Each neighbourhood was called by the name of its bay,as Copacabana,Flamengo,Botafogor /> Ipanema and Leblon, and others as the name of its valley,as Laranjeiras and Gavea.
Rio's most famous landmarks and beaches are undoubtedly the Copacabana beach, the Sugar Loaf and the statue of Christ,in the Corcovado hill.

On 1st January 1502,the Guanabara Bay was found. As the Portuguese mistook the bay for the mouth of a large river, they named it "Rio
De Janeiro",or January River,if translated literally.
When people realized it was not a river, but a bay,it was renamed as Guanabara Bay!
The city was created in on 1st march,1565,by Estacio De Sa,Mem De Sa nephew, who was Brazil's third general Governor, and the one responsable for expelling the French from Rio on 20th january, 1567.
It was also the day catholics celebrated Sain Sebastian Day,than he became the patron of Rio De Janeiro.
The city was built close to the Sugar Loaf, and after the Frenchs gone,Mem De Sa decided to remove the city from there,in order to better protect it from invaders.
The city was the second capital of Brazil(the first was Salvador),until 1960,when Brasilia was created and Rio ceased to be the capital.
Rio remained the largest city in Brazil and also an important economic center for a long time, loosing its position to Sao Paulo.
During the 18th,it was the main trade center for gold and diamonds from Minas Gerais.
Later, its status as the Nationa Capital and as the royal residence of the Portuguese Monarch Dom Joao VI,influenced Rio's continued growth!
