Late Monday morning, 22 February 2004, I went downtown looking for a restaurant. I took the Metro and got off at the Uruguaiana station. Looking down Avenida Presidente Vargas I saw floats for that night's parade in the Sambadromo assembling, bloco members putting final touches on their creations. Later, strolling down the parallel Avenida Marechal Floriano I saw other floats -- even less ready for the big night -- moving slowly toward the Av Vargas assembly point. I also found the restaurant I was looking for. Like so much else during Carnaval -- including even most of the ubiquitous vendors' stands -- it was closed. Leave a Comment

Ok, so the chiquita banana lady is said to not be modeled after Carmen Miranda but that's a load of $^%@. Have you seen the photos?! Anyway, the Carmen Miranda museum is great. It's tiny, much tinier then she deserves, but it's a sight to see. The outside looks like a park bathroom but check it out anyway. There is great stuff inside, including the mirror she was holding when she died, and some tacky cool shirts in the giftshop/office. It's one of those hidden treasure cult museums. After my visit I wanted to start a petition to get her a bigger and better museum, at the very least some fruit on top of the one she has already :) Then again, I was 9 months pregnant and very hormonal... Parque Nacional da Tijuca Tijuca is all that's left of the tropical jungle that once surrounded Rio de Janeiro. In 15 minutes you can go from the concrete jungle of Copacabana to the 33 sq km (13 sq mi) tropical forest of Parque Nacional da Tijuca. A more rapid and drastic contrast is hard to imagine. The forest is exuberant green, with beautiful trees, creeks and waterfalls, mountainous terrain and high peaks. It is home to several different species of birds and animals, including iguanas and monkeys. The park also has an excellent trail system, with several good day hikes. The heart of the forest is the beautiful Alto da Boa Vista with several waterfalls (including the 35m/115ft Cascatinha Taunay), peaks and restaurants. And one of Rio´s landmarks, Christ, the Redeemer, is placed there. Leave a Comment

Petropolis is the imperial city located on top of the mountains on the North side of Rio. It will be a cultural trip as well as an escape from the heat and humidity in Rio. One of the easiest ways to get to Petropolis from Rio is by a tour bus. I booked a trip through Gray Line that included a round trip from the hotel in Rio to Petropolis with a complete guided tour. Lunch was not included. They offer the trips only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. More details on my Petropolis page

Praia Vermelha is a little beach behind the Pao the Açucar, and has a special sand with quite big grains. It´s a nice and quiet place if you want to enjoy the beach far from the crowded Ipanema or Capacabana. You´ll arrive there walking from Botafogo in 20 minutes. Leave a Comment

Quaint little mountain retreat about 1 and half hours from Rio de Janeiro. During the summer heat, it can be quite refreshing. Leave a Comment

Rui Barbosa (1849-1923) was a famous writer, jurist and politician. He gave his first public speech for the abolition of slavery when he was just 19. For the rest of his life he remained an uncompromising defender of civil liberties. Slavery in Brazil was finally abolished by the Lei Áurea ("Golden Law") in 1888. Part of Barbosa's legacy to history is that he authorised, as minister of finance in 1890, the destruction of most government records relating to slavery. His former residence in Rio (built in 1849) contains many of his manuscripts, letters, caricatures and first editions by Brazilian authors. It also houses memorabilia of Barbosa's life, including his 1913 car and an extensive library that's often consulted by scholars from around the world. Admission: Free. Open: Tues-Sun 9am-5pm.
