Niterói, Rio de Janeiro
Visit the Contemporary Art Museum in Niteroi. Take the ferry from Rio (in Central) to Niteroi. $0.75 one way. Then take a taxi to the Conteporary Art Museum. It looks like a space ship. (See picture). Inside there is not much art to see. And the building outside looks a lot better than inside (all form, no function), but still, it was fun to ride the ferry like a local Carioca.
The city of Niteroi, on the other side of the bay. You can get a boat at Praça Quinze. In Niteroi you must go to the MAC ( Museu de Arte Contemporanea) and to walk on Icarai Beach, to the fish market (Mercado São Pedro) on Saturdays, you buy your fish downstairs and have it cooked in the restaurants upstairs. You can go on morning weekends to Campo de São Bento to buy hand made things ( leather, ceramics, clothes, etc). If you have a car you can go to an old militar fort with wonderful views for Rio ( Fortaleza de Santa Cruz)or you can take a bus from downtown Rio (Castelo)to go for Camboinhas beach.
Still one more thing about Itacoatiara..where on earth will you find such a gorgeous lanscape??? Mountains and the sea all together!!!
NITEROI IS SOMETHING THAT YOU REALLY HAVE TO FIND OUT!;)
The hiking is rough, high slopes should be overtaken, but the sacrifice was fabulous, you can have great ocean views of Niteroi and the city of Maricá together!;)

Niteroi framed by tropical leaves...I wish i could make everybody could see what I see everyday!
Niteroi from the MAC and you can see the beach of Icaraí!
No high buildings in the beachfront like Copacabana, no big luxury like in Ipanema, jsut the nature, that is what you find in NIteroi and Itacoatiara is by far our best beach! :)
