These selected tips are based on many years of extensive (and enjoyable!) research.

You can expect to eat very well indeed in Rio, spending a lot or a (very) little. At the top end, if you can afford it, don't miss Marius Crustaceos (seafood), on Av. Atlantica in Leme, for excellent, all-you-can-eat fish and shellfish (usually including lobster) - but it's now extremely expensive by local standards. A fuller description follows (headed "splurge").

Yemanja has now closed, but you can eat excellent and inexpensive Bahian cuisine at "Toca de Siri", in Posto 6 (end of Copacabana, near Arpoador) - the less formal little brother of the more sophisticated Siri Mole.

And for the best (moderately expensive, by local standards) Japanese cuisine, go for Tanaka San, on the Lagoa (lagoon).

Everyone recommends Porcao, and the quality of their meat is certainly excellent, but I don't enjoy feeling bloated - I think this is one for people in their 20s, with very healthy appetites.

The only restaurant on the beach in Ipanema is the inexpensive Barril 1800, where the food is decent if unremarkable, and one portion can (and should) be divided between two people. Try, for example, their feijoada mineira (now available only on Saturdays).

There's an upmarket hamburger and hot dog (made from veal) place on Garcia Davila (Ipanema) called Via 7, which is popular with locals and tourists alike.

Incidentally, all eating places in Rio accept all or most credit/ debit cards, VISA and Mastercharge probably being the most widely accepted.

VT tells me that my entry is now too long, so a second installment follows.

I love the occasional feijoada, the typical black beans, pork and rice dish, available in Barril 1800, and usually eaten at lunchtime on weekends, followed by a siesta: some foreigners find this an acquired taste, but try it! It's served on Weds, Fri and the w/e at Informal, on Praca NS da Paz, and on Sts in the Garota de Ipanema, R. Vinicius de Morais, both in Ipanema. One portion is usually more than enough for two people.

This was the first place I ate anything in Rio. We were in Ipanema and stumbled upon this completely cute little cafe with an appetizing menu. The staff was so friendly despite not speaking English. Tim ordered café there and said it was top notch.

I had such a good sandwich... as did Tim. We didn't even let ourselves LOOK at the bakery items and various cheeses they had behind ample glassfront containers. This Cafeina location is two stories with outdoor and balcony-type seating.

My sandwich- called Blanquet, cost $12.50 real (about $5 US dollars), was seasoned ricotta cheese, turkey breast, arugula and extra virgin olive oil on focaccia. It came with a nice little dipping sauce that I couldn't identify but enjoyed.

TIm had Salame, gouda, baby greens and olive oil on focaccia as well, also for 12.50.

Coffee was like 2 or 3 reals.

This is an amazingly different little place to eat. While it has some of the more normal foods for Brazil, I recommend trying its soups. Well, they aren't quite like the soups we know. They are liquids taken from things like Aipim with camarao (a Brazilian root and shrimp). It's a strange combo to think about but is actually very good. The consistency is more like chowder then a soup and it's served with little pieces of toasted bread.

The other special thing about this little place is the owner. The man in charge (Marcelo) wouldn't let us leave. He is a professional chatter. He has stories, pictures, everything. Go to this place when you have a little extra time to truly enjoy it.

I had the Aipim with Camarao and loved it. Great chowder (I had to add a little salt but that's mainly because I love food with my salt). The feijao is supposed to also be very good. My mother-in-law had it. It's the liquid part from the beans you would normally eat with rice down here.

FYI: There will be two Carnival street parties at the Flamengo location. They are the one Sunday before and one Sunday after Carnival

    At the bar (of course)

Just bustling with young, attractive locals and such. We came here with Brazilian friends. Tons of outdoor seating and a nice LITTLE bar inside.

Of course we started with caipirinhas, of course! (At the bar, while waiting for a table for ages, no worries.)

Tim tipped me off on this cool little tapas selection inside- tons of tiny chilled white containers full of delectable little treats. I don't think it was on the menu? I ordered from the selection inside and they brought it to our table.

We had two completely decadent sizzling dishes of food, both came in cast iron skillets. One was meat and tons of cheese and fried yuca on top, the other was the same but with chicken. Plus my concoction of tapas-type food - it was a feast for the four of us.

Let's see my platter of tasty treats contained ricotta wrapped in thinly sliced eggplant, ***ake mushrooms wrapped in thinly sliced eggplant, some sort of extremely tangy cheese with sundried tomatos inside it, hearts of palm and artichoke hearts. there were AT LEAST 20 other things to choose from too.

Cobal is a great place to go at the end of the day to meet up with friends. There are many restaurants to choose from and it's always packed!

**Unless you go to somewhere really fancy food is not expensive in Brazil

I love picanha...it's a wonderful cut of beef that's super tender and juicy!

Now, you are already having your delicious pastry.

To wash it down, nothing better than a good glass of Caldo de Cana. grinded on the spot, at the moment you order, cold, sweet, very sweet..

This particular stall has, in my opinion, the city's best Caldo de Cana. I use to go there from time to time, just to have it.

Transa: Outdoor dining along Av. Atlantica

  • After having a late lunch of feijoada, we weren't terribly hungry that evening so we wandered along Av. Atlantica from our hotel, perusing the menus of the myriad of restaurants that cater to hotel patrons and selected Transa since there seemed to be a lot of people eating there and it was a nice evening for outdoor dining.

Sunday night we did the same wander down Av. Atlantica and ended up here again since we knew we liked the food.

We tried a small special sausage pizza (R$11) which was about the size of a Lean Cuisine pizza but much better tasting and an order of mixed pastries filled with meat, cheese or shrimp (R$8). Total bill with drinks and included service was $R29 ($14US)

The second night we ordered a medium pizza, another order of pastries and a heaping plate of french fries that had looked good the night before but that we didn't have an appetite for. Total bil with 2 drinks and service for that night was $R52 ($25US), the restaurants along Av. Atlantica tend to be a bit more expensive since they are catering to tourists but that's not too bad for dinner.

Broth: Buffet food by the kilogram

    Broth

We had been heading to a place called Kilogram, which has a similar format to Broth, when the mustard was flung on my shoe and we decided to turn around and head back to our hotel. We passed by Broth and decided to have lunch here after taking a look at the ample buffet.

The format of the by the kilogram restaurants that are popular in Rio is that you grab a plate, fill it up with whatever looks tasty, have it weighed and marked down on your bill and then start eating. You can make as many trips as you need to fill yourself up so it's a good idea to a) not load your plate too high b) not take HUGE portions of something that you may find out that you don't like however tasty it might look.

Our bill came to R$41 (about $20US) for 2 pretty full plates of food, 2 sodas and a small sampling of dessert.

The buffet had a wide sampling of dishes, meat, fish, casseroles, cooked vegetables, salad bar, rice, beans, french fries, etc. I tried little portions of a lot of different things and most everything was good.
