An absolute must while in Rio is a visit to Cervantes; Rua Barata Ribeiro, 7 the stand up part around the corner not the sit down restaurant. To those who are not constantly in search of culinary delights it might appear like a hole in the wall and easily missed. It is open day and night; I think it’s closed on New Year’s Day and/or Christmas. otherwise it’s a hub, be it for a late night feast at four in the morning while you drag yourself home from some club or pub or an afternoon snack, this ranks as one of the finest eateries in the world. Don’t get me wrong it’s a small stand up sandwich bar, whether you are daintily picking the ton of meat packed between two slices of bread for an afternoon snack or stuffing your face at four in the morning, their sandwiches are to die for, and dirt cheap. My favorite is their pork sandwich with pineapple. Ohh that I could have one now!! followed by a Chopa (Beer) When I first started to visit Cervantes many years ago the lads behind the counter were young and thin, but these days there proximity to all that good food is apparent, they are a joyful lot and always eager to please, and tolerant of the fact that you may not speak a word of Portuguese. I do believe that they may have an English and Spanish version of the menu stuffed away under the counter.
