Academia de Cachaca: Cachaca heaven
  • Satisfaction:
  • Do not miss this one as the area and this restaurant are very lively filled with locals and some tourists to this off beach bar with plent of tables on the street and a lively atmosphere late into the night. As you can tell by the name this place specializes in cachaca the national sugar cane drink and of course caprinha the national drink made from such. The selling point is the over 500 varieties some of which are detailed in the cachaca menu(I highly recommend the 54 percent alcohol from paraiba). You are not likely to find this in the states though Pitu, and 54 can be found here and some liquour/wine stores in the USA. The food is good as we had Acaraje which is a bahain dish made from chick peas an served with a tomato like sauce an shrimp. Spice it up a bit with some pimenta(malangueta). Do site outside though the inside bar area is nice to look at just to see the sheer number of cachaca bottles on the wall.

Cachaca cachaca and the drinks made from it. Drink it straight or in a caprinha or in one of the other drinks on their menu.

Hotel D'bar: Trendy hotel bar and restaurant
  • Satisfaction:
  • This trendy bar and restaurant on the second floor of the Marina all suites hotel would make Ian and Phillip proud. It is very trendy with high priced drinks by Rio standards(9 for a caprinha that even in the beach cafes cost only 5 to 6). The food is not brazilian and has a menu not too different than the encounter bar at LAX which I would recommend over this one as it is a much nicer spot even if it trendy quotient has decreased with time. The service was nothing to shout about in a country where even a small streetside cafe will have attentive service. The hostess was attractive and bar/resturant was nicely designed with a modern marine theme but skip the place and head to a bar in lapa, Academia cachaca, sindicato de chopp or any beachside cafe.

None, saw the menu and just had a drink and left.

    sindicato de chopp: Beachside cafe
  • Satisfaction:
  • At the far end of Atlantic avenue well past the Marriot and tourist hotels is where you actually see some locals eating at this beachside cafe without the fancy tables and white clothed tables as the crowd spills beyond the tent to site on plastic tables is where better pizza and less touristy feel prevail. You still have the beach and they still accept most major credit cards so do not worry. The lonely planet guidebook claimed another one just off the beach but it had gone out of business and another restaurant that did not look as good had replaced it. So skip the cafes in front of the hotels further down copacabana and site down for a large pizza around 18 reias(around 7 Us dollars) that can easily feed three and order some chopps for another 2 and do some people watching.

Only had the pizza with catupiry cheese which you will unlikely find outside of brazil so do try and order the house bear or the dark version both are good.

    Porcao: Rodizio
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is the high end tourist class steakhouse located in most locations of the city and surrounding and is detailed in every tourbook and easy to find whether you are in ipanema/leblon or copacabana as I think there are over 11 locations. Though it was the most expensive and all you can eat feast of every cut of beef plus chicken and pork cost less 46 reais which at the time of my travel comes to 16 US dollars. Drinks and dessert cost extra though unlikely to have room for the dessert after finishing with the large salad bar and parade of picanha, filet mignon, sirloin, chick, ribs, roast beef.

All the dishes were good the filet mignon with garlic was amazing as was the one with cheese. You get to choose two side dishes at a time, alternate after finishing as the farofa, bananas and molho companha(vinagrete). Mix black beans with whtie rice sprinkle some farofa and top your meat with the vinagrete and squeeze some lime take a sip from your chopp(beer) or carprinha and settle in for a enjoyable meal.

Gero: The best food in Rio
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The brick exterior to the restaurant with its door men & valet parkers leads to a superbly arranged modern interior with bar running the length of the room. The waiters are truly well trained and the food is what really makes this restaurant stand out from the crowd - simply the best restaurant in Rio.

Umas e Ostras: Don't Miss the less expensive Seafood!
  • Satisfaction:
  • If you are searching for seafood like my czech friends, and can only find veeeeery expensive restaurants in Rio, with a small fish served, try "Umas e Ostras". First of all, it's in Tijuca, the best neighborhood in the world (mine, of course). It's optimal for dinning after going to Maracana stadium, because it's close. The price isn't so unexpensive, thou, but they serve you WELL. I mean, 3 people can eat one dish.

Fish fillet "a bonne femme". The fish fillet (they say it's for 2, but 3 people can eat it) comes with white sauce, au gratin, with mushrooms, shrimps, mashed potatoe.

Casa de Feijoada: Not only on Saturdays
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Feijoada is the national dish of Brazil and it's definitely a tradition not to be missed when you visit this country. So, what do you do if you're not in Brazil on a Saturday when it's traditionally served? Well, if you're in Rio, head to this place and you can get it seven days a week. What is it? Feijoada is a bean stew that's served in a clay pot with whatever meat you want. You can get it with sausage, pork loin or bacon, but I prefer it with carne seca, or dried meat, which gives it a little more of a robust taste. It's served with farofa, which is cassava flour. I personally don't think the flour (which you sprinkle over the stew) adds a whole lot of flavor but it's not bad.

Torre do Barao: Have a hankering for pizza?
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • After the game at Maracana, Linnea, Richard and I were out strolling around Ipanema after having a few drinks and decided to stop at this cafe on Rua Vinicius de Moraes. We ordered beer and a Cheese/Sausage/Onion pizza. It wasn't bad, but nothing to get excited about either. The sausage was more like hot dog meat and the cheese in Brazil is often this creamy, processed stuff. Not sure what it's called, but it's just okay.
