Souvenirs from Brazil for all your friends at home

  • street market at Av. Pres. Vargas - Rio de Janeiro
    street market at Av. Pres.

If you want to bring a souvenir from Brazil to your friends you can go and buy in the tourist-shops, maybe postcards or T-Shirts from Rio, some jewelry, stones, etc.....all the major touristic points have some things to buy..but of course this things are expensive.

If you want to make a good deal, look around at the faires and markets, especially on Praca Quinze de Novembro or at Centre of Rio,...there are a lot of street vendors who offers some nice souvenirs...and you can even look up for more cheap things!

Maybe you have friends, family or neighbours at home who are brazilian, ...or you liked maybe the songs you hear in the radio all night long...so the best things to make them a great pleasure (because this things are very difficult to get in other countries) are: a packet of "farofa pronta" or a "Cachaca 51" to do caipirinha...
(this things you can buy in every supermarket), and also some brazilian CD's (Daniela Mercury, Axe Music, Samba, etc..)

Some souvenirs, stones and international and brazilian CD's (original ones, but much cheaper than in shopping centers !!!) you can get at the street market near to the metro staion "Presidente Vargas" at Av. Pres. Vargas in the centre of Rio!
To find this market you go out of the metro at “Uruguiana” and go in direction "Pres.Vargas", ..if you come out directly at the Pres.Vargas that was right way and the market should be on your right hand already..

Brazilian or international CD's you can buy (in original package) at this street market for 10-15 Reais, if you buy it in special CD shops you will pay around 20-30 Reais!

Jewelry: What to buy in Brazil
  • Tip Rating:
  • Brazil is one of the world's largest producers of gold and the largest supplier of colored gemstones. The most abundant gems are diamonds, aquamarines, topazes, amethysts, emeralds, rubellites, and tourmalines. If you're making a large purchase, buy at shops that offer certificates of authenticity and quality.

Rio offers a variety of shops. There are high fashion boutiques for the discriminating buyer, street vendors for the bargain hunter, and malls for the shopper who likes air conditioning. Besides jewellery, the most popular items for sale are artwork, summer clothing, coffee, euro-style clothing and CDs of Brazilian music.

    Shopping Districts
Ipanema has the most fashionable shops. You will find exclusive boutiques along Rua Visconde di Piraja. Between streets Garcia D´Ávila and Anibal de Mendonça is Diamond Row. In addition to the Amsterdam Sauer Museum of Gems, you can visit the world headquarters of jewellers H. Stern, with museum and workshop tour. The concierge at your hotel can make the arrangements, and they will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel for free.
Copacabana offers bookstores, souvenir shops, and better shops along Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana and adjacent streets. Try Avenida Atlântica for upscale jewelry.
Babilônia Feira Hype is the trendiest and most fun shopping spot in Rio. Inspired by European street markets, this weekend-long event is held twice a month at Rio's Hippodrome, where you will find around 170 stalls.

DOWNTOWN: A COOL OPTION FOR SHOPPING
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is an outdoor shopping center, completely different from all malls we have in the city...It is not in the city centre of rio, it is located in the west pat of the town.

Barra da Tijuca is a big ditrict of Rio, atually it offers many options and a wonderful beach. this is also the place where cariocas with rich pockets are moving, searching for best quality of life. Indeed, you really have many different things to do.

Have you ever seen a shopping mall with corners, streets and squares???

A place with more than 1300 stores... 12 great cinemas rooms and a place which holds many best restaurants in the city?????

There is also a big private university where students can have all the best education, and after the class, we all can have fun in the bars in such a light and spectacular ambience full of trees???

You can find everything at DownTown, it is really a great option for shopping...you really should visit everything!;)

    TO GET THERE:

There are two main avenues in Barra da tijuca, the one which follows the beach, Ayrton Senna, and the one which cross the district in the back yards, it is an express way called Americas Avenue..When you see a rounded church, keep your right, and you will see a huge city in the right side of the pavement...it is right beside another shopping center called CITTÁ AMERICA!;)

It is a well off place but absolutely possible for every budget, what they want is impressing you with good taste, confort and pleasure!

    EVERYTHING FOR ALL TASTES,AGES,STYLES,POCKETS..
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rio is certainly the capital of Brazilian fashion, holding the most famous designers and models, and fashion is without doubt the main attraction in the South Zone malls and Barra malls.
Open hours for malls are,Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 22:00,and Sundays, from 15:00 to 21:00.
In the South Zone the main malls are "Rio Sul" and "Shopping Da Gavea",competing with the stores and smallers malls of Ipanema.
Garcia D'avila street is where you can find international names as Cartier,H.Stern,Amsterdam Sauer and Ben Bros.
After Leblon, and on the way to Barra, you have Sao Conrado, witha great fashion mall offering an excellent range of Brazilian fashion.Arriving in Barra, you have a "boom" of new malls, including Downtown,Citta' America,Barra Garden and Barra Shopping.
For a total decoration experience, visit the Rio Design Center, where you can find crafts from all over Brazil!
For antiques collectors, try in the weekends the fair at Praca XV(15th square, downtown),
Santos Dumont Square,in Gavea or the antique stores in Do Lavradio street,in Lapa.
For streets fairs, try the Hippie Fair in Ipanema,or Babylonia Hippie Fair,in Gavea.
Another tipical street fairs are the open street markets, selling fruits, vegetables, but they move around all the time, than little local knowledge is needed to know when and where one is open near your hotel,I really recomend to visit one of these markets,it's a delicious impressive mix of collors and smells!

SAARA is how is called the traditional commerce center in Rio, many of them owned by libanese or jews immigrants who came to Rio in last century. Now we see also many shops run by asiatics too. For me it's a special place because I went shopping there with my mother since I was a child and today where you find the best deals.

You can buy clothes, handcraft material , chinese things, material for carnaval clothes, lugagge, tapestry material, etc.

    Malls: Malls Mania
  • Tip Rating:
  • Brazilian have a passion for malls, in the american way. So you will find a lot of them in Rio.
They are convenient if you want to do some shopping on a rainy day (yes that sometimes happen) or if you are seeking for a fresh place to escape the heat.

The more convenient is the Rio Sul which is located in Botafogo area. Almost all buses from Copacabana, in direction to the city center, stop there. It is written "Rio Sul" on the buses. You will find many shops there, especially fo fashion, and also places to eat.

But the biggest malls are located in the "posh areas" going in the direction of Barra da Tijuca.
The "Fashion Mall" in São Conrado hosts the more expensive brands. The " Rio Design" in Leblon is more about decorating.

But the most impressive of all is the famous "Barra Shopping" in Barra (av das Americas). It is one of biggest malls in South America. You can go there from Copacabana (taking buses with written "Barra Shopping") but it will take you around 45mn.

The malls are of very good quality. With both local and international brands. And the prices are (in comparison with Europe) in general much cheaper.

    Brazilian fashion (especially beach wear)
    Havainas sandals
    Caçhaca
    ...

    Shopping Cidade Copacabana
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you're into antiques and art then this is the place for you. This shopping centre contains over 70 antiques shops and 5 art galleries along with about 200 other shops. I came here because I heard there were a few record shops which are located on the 1st floor. The shopping centre isn't the most attractive place on earth but is quite querky and has some off-the-beat type of shops as well as a 24hr supermarket where I bought a friend some cheap cigarettes.

Various street vendors: Arts and crafts along Copacabana
  • Tip Rating:
  • Late in the evening, artists and street vendors set up shop along Avenida Atlantica across from Copacabana. It is just as romantic, in my opinion, to strolling past the street vendors near the Seine River in Paris. You can buy anything from paintings to t-shirts to Amazonian jewelry. You can even buy a mounted piranha, which will blend in with any decor! Even if shopping is not a priority, "window shopping" will be more than a satisfying experience. Even if you don't buy a painting, the artists appreciate the attention you are giving to their work.

This is a great place to buy original art. If you buy it unframed, the painting can be rolled up into a tube. It is also a great place to buy soveneirs.

  • Theme: Local Craft
  • Directions: Across from Copacabana, along Avenida Atlantica. Most of the shops are set up on the walkway in the middle of the street. Some vendors, many of whom are unlicensed, set up on the other side of the street.

Rua Visconde de Piraj?: Trendiest shops
  • Tip Rating:
  • Visconde de Piraj? street, in Ipanema, has most of the trendiest shops in town. There you'll find stores like Foch, Cavalera, many sunglasses stores, and at the end of the street, pass the square, stores like Louis Vitton and designer's stores.
    Definately a must go.

Rio is definately the place to buy tshirts, beachwear, sunglasses and everything that involves outdoors, beach and sun.
