    Beach Gear: Ipanema Souvenirs

by JohnniOmani Written Sep 8, 2009

Rio De Janeiro has a surprising lack of tourist shops. Most of the typical gear you would like to buy for friends and family can be purchased at the beach in Cocacabana or Ipanema. Items include beach towes, swimsuits, soccer jerseys etc. Just about every thing you could want can be found on the beaches and for a great price. The best places for paintings or art work can be found across from the surfers at Ipanema on the boardwalk. Great stuff.

What to buy: Soccer Jerseys, T shirts, paintings, carvings, jewellery, hats , postcards etc etc

What to pay: T Shirts are around 10 reals, hats are around 8 reals and soccer jerseys are around 30 reals.

The hippie market in Ipanema is once a week and a bit of a tourist market, but plenty of locals come here too.
It's quite a good laugh and a good place to pick up the latest t-shirt fashion in Rio.

    Zona Sul: Groceries

I noticed a few of these Zona Sul's around town, so if you need to stop and grab some groceries, this is a good place. This one is located in Copacabana off of Rua Bulhoes de Carvalho near Ipanema.

The best shopping is found along the beach with people just trying get by by selling Brasilian souvineers. Most of the shops in the town don't offer anything special.

    Big bargains!

What to buy: I have found extremely cheap prices for clothes and shoes. For example, for a pair of Timberland shoes which cost about £60 (R$300) in UK, I paid £20 (R$100) in Rio and they are not fakes!
