Well, everybody knows that I am very proud about Brazil and Rio which is my city, I am not proud but I am always in love...and Candelaria is one of the greatest jewels of Rio, it is in the heart of the city centre for you to see!

Easy to find, and during the day, it is pretty safe to walk around!

Ohhhhhh if the Catholic Church wanted to show people what Heaven is, for sure they came to this church before, if you look up you can easily spend more than 40 minutes watching the delicate hand working of many brazilian and portuguese artists from that time coming from the 17th Century!

I strongly recommend you to visit Candelaria...SIMPLY, GO THERE!

Built between 1775 and 1877, NS de Candelaria was the largest and wealthiest church of imperial Brazil. The church was built on the site of a chapel founded in 1610 by Antônio de Palma after he survived a shipwreck; paintings in the present dome which was made in Lisbon from 1865 to 1877, tell his tale. The doorway by Teixeira Lopes was cast in bronze in Bruzy, France, and it was displayed in the World Fair of Paris in 1889. The interior is a spectacular combination of Baroque and Renaissance styles.

    The Candelaria's door by RTL

Brazil is the biggest catholic country in the world, and this tradition is here for more than 500 years, thanks to the portuguese colonization, and in Rio you can see beautiful barroc churches just like this marvelous one, the Candelaria, right in the end of Presidente Vargas Avenue, this church was built in 1727 when Brazil was a colony of Portugal!

The impressive façade of the Candelária Church rises tranquilly from the bustling financial center of Rio downtown, in the heart of an area rich in cultural attractions. Built in the XVIII Century, its ground-plan is designed in the shape of a Latin cross; lined with marble, its masonry facades feature elaborate bronze doors, with its entire history painted on the walls. This is one of the loveliest churches in Rio de Janeiro.

    Igreja da Candelaria

by MartaBotelho Updated Jan 30, 2004

Candelaria church is located right in the middle of downtown. It's turned into the ocean and around the building the traffic passes by in a hurry for work. It was constructed in the XVIII century, and it has a typical cross shape design. Marble covers all of the interior together with mural paintings about it's history. Outside the bronze doors with amazing sculpture work are surrounded by beautiful figures of stone. It's considered one of the most beautiful churches of Rio and it is cathedral size.
