Catedral de Sao Sebastiao
This cone-shaped cathedral was inaugurated in 1976 after 12 years of construction. The exterior of the cathedral which looks like a pile of concrete, can be off-putting. But don't judge until you've stepped inside. Vivid 60 meters high stained-glass windows transform the light and make the interior picturesque sight. When you enter look to your left and you will see the statue of the Black Mary.
The cathedral is 80 meters high and has a diameter of 106 meters and can accommodate up to 20,000 worshippers.
Located near Praca XV de Novembro, it is dedicated to Rio's patron saint, and the visitor can find a silver altar as well as a wonderful representation of Nossa Senhora do Carmo by Antonio Parreiras.
According to legend, the remains of Pedro Alvares Cabral, the first European to find Brazil, are buried in the crypt of this church.
The Museu de Arte Sacra (Museum of Sacred Art) in the basement contains a number of historical items, including the baptismal font used at the christening of royal princes and the throne of Dom Pedro II.
