Flamengo is a mostly residential neighbourhood situated between Botafogo and Centro. Its main feature is the Parque do Flamengo (officially called "Parque Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes"), a beautifully landscaped green park which borders the sea and has its own beach. The park was designed by Burle Marx, the famous landscape architect who also designed Copacabana's wavy black and white mosaic pavements. It is said that the area's name, Flamengo, was derived from the word "Flemish" in Portuguese in reference to a Belgian who owned the land centuries ago. The area has some expensive houses and is considered rather high end. The beautiful looking beach is almost never crowded because the water in this area is very polluted. However, the park and the beach are used almost exclusively by locals for sunbathing, jogging and other outdoor activities.

This beach is a lot quiter than the busy beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. The beach itself is thin and straight and offers great views of Sugarloaf and Niteroi. There are some shady trees nearby but do take care as there didn't seem to be a police presence when I visited.

Near downtown, you'll find some other interesting neighborhoods such as Gloria, Catete and Flamengo. I didn't have enough time to really get to know these areas or to figure out exactly where the dividing lines are between them, but you can easily reach these neighborhoods by the Metro from Copacabana or Ipanema. Some of the main sights include the Church of Our Lady of Gloria and the Museum of the Republic. Also be sure to visit the large park next to the bay, known as Flamengo Reclaim. Here you'll find a Museum of Modern Art and the Carmen Miranda Museum.

A large green space built in the 60's by Governor Carlos Lacerda. It hugs Guanabara Bay all the way from Flamengo to Downtown. The gardens were planned by landscape designer Burle Marx with more than 3,000 different species of plants and trees. You will find walking trails, sports courts and a bicycle lane along the extension of the park. Marina da Glória can anchor up to 1,500 boats. On Sundays one of the car lanes is closed to traffic and open to pedestrians. In addition to recreation facilities, you will find Rio's Museum of Modern Art, Carmen Miranda Museum, and the Monument to Casualties in World War II. A fabulous place for sport enthusiasts or for people who just like to stroll.

In Flamengo's Park you can see Estacio De Sa's monument,World War II monument,
the Museum of Modern Arts and the glorious Carmem Miranda museum.
It has soccer fields,basketball courts,paths for jogging,walking and biking.
On the weekends,the freeway that runs alongside the park is closed for traffic.
The park was built through landfill,and designed by MY ULTIMATIVE and MOST LOVE IN ALL WORLD(!!!)Brazilian Master landscape architect ROBERTO BURLE MARX(my myth,I'm a nbr one fan of this guy!!).
