    Shopping in Visconde de Pirajá

    by tere1 Written Aug 29, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Visconde de Pirajá may be the most attractive commercial street in Rio - especially if you are not a fan of hyper malls, like me. It's situated in Ipanema.

The street is lined up with banks, bars, restaurants, travel agencies and some of Rio's best boutiques. There are also many specialty shops, hotels, gyms, night clubs, 24-hour bookstands, drugstores... you will find everything you could be looking for, and then some more.

It's my favourite place for shopping in Rio!

    See the soap opera actors!

    by tere1 Written Aug 29, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Brazil is famous for its soap operas that appear already in most international televisions. In Portugal we have about 3 or 4 Brazilian soap operas going on tv during the week.

During my last stay in Rio, at the Marina Palace Hotel, they were filming a soap opera that was passing in Portugal at the hotel lobby and at the beachfront of the hotel.

It was fun and exciting for us to see the well known faces we are used to watch on tv right before us. There were large meausures of security but nevertheless the actors all were friendly to those who were watching them and even gave some autographs.

the actress Camila Pitanga the actor Tony Ramos the actress Cristiane Torloni a pause in the filming

    Sao Conrado - Hanggliding!

    by tere1 Written Aug 29, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Sao Conrado is one of of Rio de Janeiro's prettiest neighborhoods. It's about 10 minutes away from Leblon.

São Conrado has two condominiums with luxury apartment buildings. They are home to many of Rio's rich and famous, including the mayor. There are also private streets up the hills lined up with posh mansions.

The area is served by the Fashion Mall. This sophisticated shopping center featuring world-famous labels has movie theaters, and good restaurants and eateries.

In contrast to all the glitz and glamour, São Conrado is where you will find Rocinha. Rio de Janeiro's largest favela.

And if you ever considered hanggliding, this is the spot for you to get started. You may go on a dual flight with an experienced professional, and the view is simply fantastic.

Have many drinks @ beachside 'kiosk' like Henry's

by sunlovey Written May 4, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Or was it Harry's? Anyway, they're those yellow or green little buildings with coordinating tables and chairs about them. Go there for agua de coco, beer, juice, water, soda, even snacks. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY- CHEAP caipirinhas!!!!! (around 3 reals = $1.20-ish) This is great all day long but best at dusk... And once again, the people that run these places are super friendly.

Just expect to be approached by many people selling odd things such as handful of nuts, hammocks, soccer shirts, sunglasses, etc. etc. They're not going to hurt you though. So be nice. (I saw some tourists being really mean to them) Just note, they are persistent.

    Beach streets on Sundays

by sunlovey Written May 6, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A very cool concept considering crossing the streets along both Ipanema and Copacabana on a regular day is something like being the frog in that old video game frogger.

So on Sundays the roads along the beach for the most part are closed off to cars and the cariocas take to the streets on their bikes, on foot, walking their dogs etc. So why not join them? Be sure to stop for a beer or caipirinha along the way...

Praça Quinze is Rio's main square. If you like historic building, then this is the place to visit. If you stand at the praça looking at the Pão de Açúcar you´ll have Rio's theatre on your back (an amazing building), the town hall on your right, and Rio's public library on your left. And you can visit the theatre and the library, which are great.
