    So Bento Monastery

When the weather does not help and it rains all day long, it is no use staying at home, we always have to find something to do, and maybe a good recommendation is visiting historic sites of Rio, one of the most impressive is the Sao Bento Monastary, it is a 1576 construction, a beautiful sample of our barroc art...the church is covered by gold, the catholic rituals are all in gregorian chants, and it is a invitation for peace and also a visit to this church take us to the interesting past of Rio de Janeiro.

Just a glimpse of this church's main altar can fill you with awe. Layer upon layer of curvaceous wood carvings coated in gold create a sense of movement. Spiral columns whirl upward to capitals topped by cherubs so chubby and angels so purposeful they seem almost animated. Built between 1617 and 1641 on Morro de Sao Bento, one of the four hills that once marked colonial Rio, the monastery is one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in Brazil, and offers a fine view over downtown Rio.

Open: Daily from 8-11am and 2-6pm.

Rafael in the present with the past in his back

Gold and Wood Art...The barroc in Brazil is very obvious because of the huge portuguese influence. And in the Monastery of São Bento you can see a massive quantity of arts and this church is famous for its gregorian chant.

total BARROC in Rio in So Bento's Monastery - RTL

Founded in 1590 by monks from Bahia, the Benedictine Monastery of Rio de Janeiro was built in response to the wishes of the city's early citizens. It is one of the oldest spots of Rio and great witness of our history. In portuguese we call MOSTEIRO DE SÃO BENTO.

I took my friends from Londrina there, and as brazilians like we are, we got very proud, above all to see an accurate attempt to preserve the arts and the whole building of the Monastery!

Sao Bento Monastery in Downtown Rio

by tijuca Updated Jul 12, 2005

This monastery was probably started in 1617 or 1618. You walk though the doors and you're immediately in awe of all of the gold leaf adorning everything in sight. Ornate is an understatement. Located on a hillside right in the middle of bustling downtown Rio, the monastery is an island of tranquility not to be missed on any trip to Rio.
