The famous Sugar Loaf is a huge 395 meters rock desprovided of vegetation. It has granite origin and was changed into the shape we know for 600 million years!!! It sits together with the "Morro da Urca" with 215 meters height at the entrance of the Guanabara Bay. The origin of the "Pao de Acucar" name remotes to the native indegenes Tamoios that called it "Pau-nh-acuqua" in the Tupi-Guarani language, than means "big pointy isolated rock". The two rocks are surrounded by the typical vegetaion called "Mata Atlantica". In one of the sides of the Sugar Loaf you can see a 200 meters figure sculped in the rock. It is called the "Guardian of the Rock" and it is said to represent Saint Peter. Other legends and curiosities are connected with the rock and you can read about them in their website. In 1912 the "Bondinho" was inagurated and it connects the Sugar Loaf to Morro da Urca and then to mainland. It is a beautiful ride and once at the top you have a 360 degrees view of Rio de Janeiro!! On the Morro da Urca is located a helicopter service with a bunch of diferent tours. You can take the ride for a confortable price and see Rio de Janeiro from the sky!! It is sooo worth the money!!! A visit to the famous Pão de Acúcar (Sugar Loaf) is a must do in Rio! You go to the top with a cable-car and there is a fantastic view over Rio during the cable-car ride. The ride is split into two separate parts: the first to Morro da Urca ascends 215meters; the second to the summit of Pão de Acúcar ends 396meters above Rio. At Urca you can see the Copacabana beach, the port, Corcovado, the Guanabara Bay and Niteoroi. At the top of Pão de Acúcar there are even more breathtaking views over the region. There are fast-food shops, souvenir shops and toilets at both platforms. Avoid cloudy days!

by janaina In the Urca hill, there's another cablecar that goes to the top of Sugar Loaf itself(1.300 feet high). Each cable ride takes about 5 minutes. The Sugar Loaf is a group of 3 hills:Urca hill, Sugar Loaf and Cara De Cao hill(dog's face if translated..). On the top of Urca hill, there's a large area with restaurants, shops, theater, recreation area for kids,etc.. There's a small area where the visitors can see also some kinds of plants and small birds from Brazil. Here is a picture I took with the Urca hill left behind.. Leave a Comment

by janaina The Sugar Loaf, undoubtedely the most famous symbol of Rio,is located in the Guanabara Bay,and the access to the top is made by a cable car. The journey to the top is divided in 2 parts:there is a cable car which rises 705 feet above the bay, departing from the station at Praia Vermelha to the top of the first hill, called Morro Da Urca. Here is a view from Urca hill. Leave a Comment

I had seen so many pictures of Sugarloaf Mountain before so I was not going to miss riding a cable car to reach its top. I cannot remember how much I paid, but I think it was less than $10 ( was it $8?). But no matter how much, it was worth it. I remember going to a base station (Praca General Tiburcio?) which is at a small water peninsula (entrance of Guanabara Bay) – and from this station, the cable car leaves every 30 minutes from 8-10PM everyday. The cable car (called “bondinho” in Portuguese or sometimes, teleferico) actually joins the hills of Urca (220 meters/705 feet) and Sugar Loaf( 575 meters/1300 feet). It can hold 75 passengers (some say 115 passengers). The views while still in the cable car are already stunning and the rides from base to Urca (halfway), and Urca to Sugar Loaf only took about 5-10 minutes if I remember right. So, when you go out at Urca, you get excited to see the view and also enjoy the shops and restaurants. Then ride the cable again, and you get the magnificent view atop Sugar Loaf! On a clear day, it’s just as in the postcard! But this mountain which is shaped like concentrated refined loaf sugar also has historical significance – this is where Rio de Janeiro was originally founded in 1565. The most recognisable postcard image from Rio, Pão de Açucar, or Sugarloaf Mountain, dominates the centre of Rio and the entrance into Baìa da Guanabara. The steep mountain was called pau-nh-acugua, meaning "pointed peak", by the indigenous people, a name that to Portuguese ears sounded sufficiently close to Pão de Açucar or Sugarloaf, which also accurately describes the shape of the mountain. Since the introduction of the first cable cars in 1912, visits to the top of the mountain have been possible. First the visitor climbs up the smaller mountain, Morro de Urca where there are bars and restaurants and good views over the city. Then a second cable car takes the visitor to the higher peak for even better views over the entire city. Also worthwhile is the 7-minute helicopter ride from Morro de Urca that circles Morro de Corcovado/Cristo Redentor and back, and for those mountain climbers amongst us, climbs of Pão de Açucar are frequently organised. Pão de Açúcar (sugarloaf in English) was originally called pau-nh-acugua (high, pointed peak) by the indigenous Tupi people. The Portuguese developed the original name to their own use as the rock's shape reminded them of the conical loaves in which refined sugar was sold. The rock rises 396m above the surrounding sea and is a most thing to see in Rio. Seen from it's peak, the views of Rio make it the most beautiful city in the world. From high up you can see the arc of the whole sandy beach of Capacabana, the beaches or Botafogo, Flamengo and Gloria, the office towers of Centro and a great view of the statue of Christ the Redeemer. It's common sense but try and go on a clear day but also go at sunset. Leave a Comment
