The statue is on top of a 704 m mountain and commands a fantastic series of views of Rio from the Soccer stadium, Maracana, to the north all the way past the downtown, Guanabara bay and the beaches of Botafogo, Vermelha, Copacobana, Arpoador, Ipanema and Leblon. Across the bay, the City of Niteroi grazes the horizon and the many beaches on the other side of the bay and on out to the Atlantic as the view spreads east, towards Buzios. Whatever you do pick a day that has some sunshine and thus the ability to be very impressed by the size of Rio and the way nature has scattered islands, hills, bays and beaches around, enough to please all the visitors and for those visitors to envy the Cariocas for the City they live in. Corcovado is the mountain dominating the Rio skyline. On the top is the statue of "Cristo Redentor" , Christ the Redeemer. This statue was built to commemorate 100 years of Brazilian independence. The view of the city from the top is amazing and well worth a visit! More than a postcard, the statue of Christ has been elected “The Wonder of Rio” by residents. From its location at the top of the 710 meters high Corcovado Mountain, the 38-meter statue is the image of the faith and friendliness of cariocas. With arms boldly stretched in welcome, he embraces the city and the magnificent Bay over which he looks. To get to Corcovado there is a train that crosses the the biggest urban forest in the world: the Tijuca National Park, a stretch of the Atlantic Forest that is considered a example of the nature's preservation. The Corcovado mountain is the best place to have a view on the Rio's bay (the Guanabara Bay). This is really the "postcard picture" ! The best spot is not at the Christ, but on the road that leads to the Christ statue. I don't know if you can stop there is you take the litte train, because I took a taxi to go up. Don't miss it, it's really beautiful. Leave a Comment Directions: On the road up to the Corcovado.

If you have got two or more hours, take the path through the scenic Tijuca Forest to go up the Christ, but other 300,000 people visit the statue of Christ every year using the 10-minute train ride to the top of Corcovado passing through Tijuca Forest. At the base station you can find the Mountain Train Cultural Center with exhibition, which displays the entire history of Corcovado. The great attraction is the huge terra-cotta head exhibited on a body of iron structure. At the end station near the top, escalators or 220 steps upward take visitors to the foot of the Statue of Christ the Redeemer. The statue is 38 meters tall, made of 700 tons of reinforced concrete covered with pale green mosaic tiles. It was originally intended to mark the 100th anniversary of Brazilian independence in 1922, but due to lack of money it was inaugurated only ten years later, on the day of Our Lady of Aparecida, 12 Oct 1931. The Christ the Redeemer has become a symbol of the city who receive visitors with open arms. At the moment it is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Admission fee: adults R$30.00, children 6-12 R$15.00, and for children under 5 free. Since 2003 an elevator and two escalators take you from the upper rack railway station to the top of the Corcovado. Elderly and disabled (and of course lazy) people are now able to go there without having to face the 150 steps. Especially the elevators tend to be crowded when the train arrives. Don't worry - the 150 are still there as well. P.S.: A sign at the rack railway station says: "We are not responsible for the weather on top of the Corcovado." Note: The sun isn't always shining in Rio ... Leave a Comment

You know you're getting close to Rio as soon as your friend and driver points out the Redeemer statue off in the far distance upon your highway approach. So as soon as you check in to your hotel and do some oooh-ing and ahhhh-ing from your oceanside balcony, you jump back in your car and head to Corcovado. R$30 for the choo-choo-train ride to the top includes the bonus armed guard onboard. No kidding. When you step off the escalator and wander over to the railings around Christ's feet, here's your reward, this heavenly vista of Sugar Loaf and all of Rio, all around you. Do it. Leave a Comment

The cog train that climbs the mountain on which the statue of Christ the Redeemer stands runs approx every half-an-hour from Rua Cosme Velho 513. The railway was built in 1884 and was the first electricfied line in Brazil. The train was used to carry pieces of the statue up to the top of Corcovado. If you have some time before your train leaves you can take a look around the small cultural centre which shows pictures of the railway and the statue being built as well as pictures by school children. You can also visit the small cafe behind which you can see trains and carriages being maintained in the service shed. Take my advice and sit on the right hand side going up for the better view. The ascent up to the top is approx 5km (3 miles) and takes roughly 15 minutes. You may wonder what those oblong medicine balls hanging from the trees are, the ones that look like spiked watermelons tied to ropes - they're jaca, or jackfruit. Open daily from 8.30am-6.30pm. Train ticket price: R$30 Leave a Comment Address: Rua Cosme Velho 513Directions: To reach the station at Cosme Velho either take a taxi or take a bus marked 'Rua Cosme Velho' - No.184 or 180 from Centro and Gloria; No. 583 from Copacabana/Ipanema; or No. 584 from Leblon.Website: http://www.corcovado.com.br/

From Corcovado you'll have all of Rio at your feet. What a view! You really have to see it in person to appreciate it. You can see all of Rio's major landmarks. The Maracana, Sugar Loaf and many more. You'll look down and see modern commercial zones and fancy houses adjacent to impoverished favelas. But what blew me away more than anything was just gazing over the city, in the shadow of the Christ statue, and thinking about what God made here. Mountains jutting out of blue waters covered in green forests. Rocks pointing up at their Maker as if to say thank you for placing me here. No matter what you believe, this place will make you think about the world. Leave a Comment

You haven't been to Rio if you don't climb the Corcovado. It's that simple. You get an amazing view of this fantastic city under that huge Christ that overlooks the whole bay. The hill itself is 710 metres high, plus the Christ which stands on a chapel for 150 persons. So you can imagine the view...You'll feel so small up there, but then so amazingly free, that you'll want to come back later. There are 3 ways to go up there: 1. By foot: If you like walking, it's definately the cheapest way to go, but rather long. 2. By train: there's a small train that goes up. 3. By cab: the way I went up. Cab drivers will always try to take advantage of you. Bargain. And try to get as many people in the cab as possible!!! We were 6 plus the driver, and we even got a discount! Anyway, it's only a short drive, so you'll feel your legs once you get up there. One more thing: if you can climb in the evening, before the sunset, you'll get an amazing view. The Corcovado Christ opens from 8h30 until 18h30 Leave a Comment

You've all seen this before. Even if you've never laid foot on South American soil (as was my case before this trip), you're probably familiar with the giant stone statue that graces Corcovado Hill over 2400 feet above the city. The Christ the Redeemer statue itself stands at almost 100 feet and was designed by Carlos Oswald. A Brazilian named Heitor da Silva Costa was the architect behind the entire complex that was built between 1926 and 1931. They call the statue Art Deco. Call it what you'd like, but I think it's cool. The angularity of the rock gives it a classic yet modern feel and a graceful yet solid stance. My guidebook says this costs $10 US. I was told by someone that it costs 30 Reais which would be around right, but here's what I experienced. I took a cab from Sugarloaf and paid the cabbie 60 reais (around 20 bucks) to take me to Corcovado and back to Copacabana. Five of the 60 reais went towards a ticket at a checkpoint just before the statue on our way up the hill. I got out of the cab and didn't pay anything else. There is a tram you can take to the top and then elevators, escalators and stairs up to the Christ. Leave a Comment
