What A View! by ChrisRJ It will take you a little while to get up to the Christ Statue, so you want to be able to appreciate the amazing view and the statue itself. When people say that clouds can roll in quickly they are not exagerating. After all you wouldn't want to get up there and have a view as in the attached photo, now would you? Leave a Comment

Corcovado by IIGUANA You haven't been to Rio if you don't climb the Corcovado. It's that simple. You get an amazing view of this fantastic city under that huge Christ that overlooks the whole bay. The hill itself is 710 metres high, plus the Christ which stands on a chapel for 150 persons. So you can imagine the view...You'll feel so small up there, but then so amazingly free, that you'll want to come back later. There are 3 ways to go up there: 1. By foot: If you like walking, it's definately the cheapest way to go, but rather long. 2. By train: there's a small train that goes up. 3. By cab: the way I went up. Cab drivers will always try to take advantage of you. Bargain. And try to get as many people in the cab as possible!!! We were 6 plus the driver, and we even got a discount! Anyway, it's only a short drive, so you'll feel your legs once you get up there. One more thing: if you can climb in the evening, before the sunset, you'll get an amazing view. The Corcovado Christ opens from 8h30 until 18h30 Leave a Comment

by acemj You've all seen this before. Even if you've never laid foot on South American soil (as was my case before this trip), you're probably familiar with the giant stone statue that graces Corcovado Hill over 2400 feet above the city. The Christ the Redeemer statue itself stands at almost 100 feet and was designed by Carlos Oswald. A Brazilian named Heitor da Silva Costa was the architect behind the entire complex that was built between 1926 and 1931. They call the statue Art Deco. Call it what you'd like, but I think it's cool. The angularity of the rock gives it a classic yet modern feel and a graceful yet solid stance. My guidebook says this costs $10 US. I was told by someone that it costs 30 Reais which would be around right, but here's what I experienced. I took a cab from Sugarloaf and paid the cabbie 60 reais (around 20 bucks) to take me to Corcovado and back to Copacabana. Five of the 60 reais went towards a ticket at a checkpoint just before the statue on our way up the hill. I got out of the cab and didn't pay anything else. There is a tram you can take to the top and then elevators, escalators and stairs up to the Christ. Leave a Comment

It's impossible to visit Rio de Janeiro and not go to the Christ that is a symbol of this City. Called "Cristo Redentor" in Portuguese it's a sculped piece of "soap" rock with 38 meters height and weights a bit more than a ton! It sits on the top of the Corcovado hill, 710 meters above the land! The numbers are impressive and so it is the monument and it's history. On the first scketches it was supposed to be holding a cross, but the people decided that he should be with his arms wide open. It was built in France and brought to Rio, then taken through the raillroad up the hill piece by piece. From there you can see the entire city. The ride up is done on a little tram that was inaugurated in 1884. You go through the Tijuca Forest, a National Park with exquisit fauna and flora. This wild forest used to be the place for coffee farms. In 1881 the Emperor decided to re-forest and protect the area. Since then it bloomed and it is a sight to see. A new elevator and mechanical escalators were inaugurated last year. So now the ride up there is as easy as it can be! Getting off the MINIBUS to Corcovado by marcbrazil There are 3 ways to go to the Christ which in Rio it is more known as CRISTO REDENTOR. First one: There is a trains tation in Cosme Velho, very traditional district of Rio next to Laranjeiras...the only access to the neighborhood is at the Bay Area, through Laranjeiras Street which starts in Largo do Machado. The train leaves every 30 minutes, one train to go and another train to return, the trip takes around 25 minutes, and the ticket costs 36 reais, the way is full of green but do not offer interesting landscapes unless if you are a botanic freak. Second one: You can go to the entrance of the National Park going to the PAINEIRAS' door, taking the Cosme Velho's street and finally reach the National park, but pay attention, it is not good if you go by yourselves...try to go there by car, ask someone you know who must be keen on Rio, and there is no bus to go there, you can also take a taxi but be very good to negociate the rate! Luckly I have some friends and everytime I go there I go with people who really knows where to go. THE ENTRANCE OF THE PARK IF OPEN AND YOU PAY A FEE OF 5 REAIS...but it is a long walk until reaching the top...but if you have time it is a great oportunity to see some parts of the forests and take great pictures Third one: THIS IS THE SAFEST AND EASIEST OPTION...Go to Paineras, and you will find a line of mini buses that takes you to the top for 10 reais, this is how most of the people do, so I think it is the best because you see much more landscapes and you can enjoy the park properly. Today I went there with our cousin Gabriela, she is also a cool friend of mine; Rafael's mother and Rafa too, we had a perfect night as every time is pleasant when you go to Corcovado! NOVEMBER 2007

corcovado view - rio de janeiro by dvideira Unfortunatly, I went there in none of those clear days... I mean... looking up, there was no single cloud to spoil the beautiful blue sky. The problem was... looking down , we were having a really smoggy day ( not unusual when a winter time suddenly becomes too hot and dry for some days ) For that reason plus the light incidence at that time I wasn't able to take pics on the other side which would show Maracana Stadium, Rio Niteroi Bridge and so.... Anyway... here is another pic showing the Jockey Club and Botanic Garden. Leave a Comment

Corcovado by andal13 Despite the problems I had at Corcovado, I could take this picture from the distance... The rain followed me to Leblon, but from there I could see the silhouette of the famous mount and its monumental Christ Redeemer. A pesar de los problemas que tuve en el Corcovado, pude sacar esta foto desde la distancia... La lluvia me siguió hasta Leblon, pero desde allí pude ver la silueta del famoso monte y su monumental Cristo Redentor. Leave a Comment

by Hexepatty Naturally, see him from the front. Wonderful Statue... worth visiting. Don't expect to be alone, however. As you can imagine... this is a very popular attraction. And since the weather is always hot, count on some discomfort. Also, take care of your stuff. Lots of tourists + lots of poor locals = increased potential for theft.... Leave a Comment
