by Hexepatty The one, the only. Be sure to see him from behind... Impressive big dude! There are a few ways to get up. A bus, a cab, a cable car. I like to see it from the Air as I fly in... or from Ipanema... Maybe you can walk too. I bet you can. I bet that would be a tiring walk, but I bet it would be pretty too, as it is in a pretty mountain park area... Leave a Comment

Statue in the Clouds by chris_i79 The view from Corvovado is the image of Rio de Janeiro marketed around the world. It is also the home of the Christ the Redeemer statue, which was placed on top of the mountain in 1917, a gift from the Vatican. The panoramic views from the mountaintop are incredible. When we first arrived we were actually above the clouds, but it eventually cleared revealing beautiful Rio de Janeiro sitting below. If you want to visit Corcovado you have two options. The first is to take the tourist train and the second is to drive. Our excursion to the statue was actually part of a booked tour of the Tijuca forest. So we did not have to worry about navigating the winding road up the mountain...although it was a lot fun sitting in the back of the jeep. If you do plan on driving, plan to go early. There is only one raod up and down and since this is on the "to do" list of every visitor to Rio, the road tends to get very busy quickly! Leave a Comment Address: 710 meters above, on Corcavado mountainDirections: just look up and search for the statue

Christ Redeemer by Alless The city's main tourist attraction was built by engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, from a project by French sculptor Paul Landowski. Date: 1926 -1931. Located atop the Corcovado Mountain at a height of 710 meters, the statue of Christ the Redeemer is certainly one of the world's best-known and most-visited monuments. This outing begins in the Cosme Velho District, aboard a miniature train that runs through the steep Atlantic Rainforest up to the foot of the statue, offering stunning glimpses of Rio from many different angles. From the top, the view is nothing short of heavenly: Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Botanical Gardens, the Jockey Club, and the Lagoon. The entire city spreads out in a magnificent panorama during the day, glittering and magic after dark and always protected by Christ the Redeemer, who blesses visitors and residents from on high. Visiting hours: daily from 8:30am to 6:30pm. Leave a Comment

When you reach the top of the train rail line, there's a lift followed by a series of esculators that take you up further to where the statue of Christ the Redeemer is. The statue itself is the most famous sight in Rio. It was built between 1926 and 1931 with funds raised from donations. It stands some 30m (100ft) high on a 6m (20ft) pedestal and weighs 700 tons on top of the Corcovado (hunchback) mountain that is 710m high above the city. It's virtually visible from everywhere and at night is illuminated against the blackness of the sky. Leave a Comment

by chris_i79 The statue of jesus sitting atop of Corcovado is the image of Rio thought of across the world. The statue itself is 30m tall with its arms spread open to embrace the citizens or Rio. There are two ways to reach the statue, either by tourist train or by a winding mountain road. If you decide to take the road leave early as traffic quickly increases. After all any tourist that comes to Rio will likely visit the statue. Once you have made the climb to the statue there are some souvineer shops as well as a restaurant trying to attract your tourist dollars. Leave a Comment Address: look up

Christ the Redeemer by Jez79 One of the most famous monuments in Rio is the statue of the Christ on top of Corcovado Mountian. The statue stands 30 metres high, with the mountain itself being 710 metres. The effect is that the Christ, with his open arms, is embracing the city. The statue was built from 1926 to 1931, designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa. French sculptor Paul Landowski completed the work on the hands and face. The ride to the top of Corcovado is a trip in itself, with the choice of a long, winding road, or a slow, steep train ride. The view from the train is interesting, with a few sneaking glimpses of what is to come. From the last train station there are now elevators and then escalators to the top, elevating the need to climb huge numbers of stairs (you can still give the ol' legs a workout if you choose). The statue of Christ the Redeemer is very grand indeed, and the view from the top spectacular. Rio's harbour and the amazing geography that makes up the city are a very impressive site indeed. There are loads of tourists making this trip, so be prepared for crowds. You can check out some more photos of the Christ in my travelogue. Probably, when you think about Rio, you think about Corcovado and Redeemer Christ. This hill and its famous statue are the symbols of this city. You will not see a picture of that statue on this page; when I went to Rio, it was being repaired. And you will not see a picture of the beautiful sight you can see from the top of Corcovado, because the day I went up, it was rainning and a thick mantle of clouds covered the landscape! Leave a Comment

above the clouds by Andreas_Fran A 2400-foot hunchback mountain in the middle of Rio is the pedestal for the majestic 125-foot high statue of Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor). The open arms of Christ symbolizes a welcome to the city. To get to the summit, you can go by taxi, car or take the cog train. The trip up the mountain winds through the dense forest of Tijuca National Park and offers a series of breathtaking vistas along the way. The most spectacular view of Rio is here! Leave a Comment
