Christ the Redeemer, Corcovado by besbel This is probably the top must-do activity in Rio de Janeiro. It was mine, too, so when I finally stood in front of this 30-meter tall Christ the Redeemer, I really felt I was in heaven :) Corcovado is located in the Tijuca National Park. You can reach the Christ either by trekking Floresta da Tijuca or by taking the Tren do Corcovado after paying the entrance fee. The first option is convenient if going during the day, with plenty of time and being careful of not getting lost. Personally I opted for the train, because it was faster and I was somehow late. That is why all my pics show the sunset. Although Corcovado is not very high (710 m) from here you can get stunning views of Rio. The view is so wide that, at least to me, seems as if the Christ is really embracing it all! Address: Tijuca National Park

The statue of Christ on Corvocado Mountain is the second largest statue in the world (only Statue of Liberty is bigger). This statue is 32 m (125 feet) tall, it weighs 1000 tons and is located on top of the 710 m (2330 foot) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park. Apart from the pure overwhelming size of the statue, it has one of the best 360 degree views Rio de Janeiro! There is a gift shop and cafe on the top where you can chill to have a beer or soft drink. It costs only 5 US$ to get entry halfway up the mountain. But it is a VERY steep walk to the top! I would suggest taking the train through the Tujica Forest (costs quite a bit extra) or taking a tour for about 30 US$ where they come pick you up at your hotel and you get to meet a lot of other travelers this way. Some companies who do the Corvocado tour are Rio Turismo Radical (http://www.rioturismoradical.com.br) and Rio Tours (http://www.riotours.clicksitebuilder.com/), but there are LOTS more! I wouldn't book a tour in advance, rather wait till you get there and ask your hotel about more info. Plus on a cloudy day, there is the possibility that you won't be able to even see the statue, nevermind the view... Address: Corvocado Mountain

by janaina Standing on the top of Corcovado mountain, this huge statue has 38mts,with a 26 foot pedestal containing a chapel that can hold 150 people. Known as Christ The Redeemer,it was brought to the top of the hill in 1931,elaborated by the Brazilian architect Heitor Da Silva Costa and sculpted by the French Paul Landwilk. In 1993,a new ilumination sistem was installed, and now,the statue can be better viewed from the most varied and distant parts of the city. The Corcovado mountains is 2.330 feet above the sea level, and it provides the most beautiful view of the city from its top! From that privileged position we can see a breathtaking view of the Guanabara Bay and Sugar Loaf Leave a Comment

One of the best ways to get up to Corcovado is by Cog Train. The train passes the Parque Nacional da Tijuca the Tijuca National Park. For the best view sit on the right hand side of the train. During high season the train departs every 30 minutes, the best way is to arrive there early, since you would come before the rush of the tour groups. Operating time is between 8:30 and 18:30. by arissat Christ the Redeemer statue is, without a doubt, the most memorable tourist attraction. It sands atop Corcovado (hunchback) Mountain, a 2,330 feet peak, with a breathtaking view of Guanabara Bay, Niteroi Bridge, Yacht Club, Sugar Loaf, Botanical Gardens, the Atlantic ocean and the beaches. To reach the soapstone covered concrete statue, 125 feet tall, weighing 1,145 tons and the viewing plataform, you can take a train or go by car. Leave a Comment

Here's some pictures of the amazing views you can see from the statue of Christ the Redeemer on top of Corcovado. Try and go on a clear day to get the best views over the city. This will probably mean that most people will do the same thing! It was a little cloudy when I went. Leave a Comment
