by Flura 'Discoteca Help' is not what guides say. That's a huge room full of 'women for pay'. No dance, no dance music, no party. Leave a Comment

by Flura Buy a sun block. Just come to any drugstore and ask for 'solara'. Picture from ipanema.com. P.S. sunblock = filtro solar. Cariocas tend to add an 'a' to the end of every word they say. Thanks to martinelli, my big sis. Leave a Comment

by windoweb The hippie fair in Ipanema is a large arts and craft area with many souvenir items to buy. I bought some canvas favela prints. Here is a picture of the artist and myself. Leave a Comment

by ssm10 One of the biggest tourist trap in Rio, in my opinion is doing the 'Favela tour'. It's a guided tour inside a favela. I believe people can be curious about how people live in a slum, but visiting it like visiting a zoo, sounds a bit strange for me !!! Maybe because I live here and am used to that, but still don't understand ! Leave a Comment

Unfortunately, Rio has a big crime problem. The majority of locals will let you go about your business, not giving you the time of day, but some see you as a chance to make a quick buck. Dont carry cameras, jewellery, watches, lots of cash with you at night, and try to get cabs between your locations. Walking the front around Copacabana is generally OK, but outside of there, be really careful. Leave a Comment

Go everywhere in the night, but the touristic restaurants at Copacaban beach. They usually are expensive, serve bad food, and dangerous - there are thieves just seeking for foreigners... as most of them prefer to go there! Leave a Comment

If you want to stay in the seashore of the city, choose a hotel in Ipanema rather than in Copacabana. Copacabana is a very busy neighbourhood, and quite 'touristic' - in the worst ways that this word could resemble. Ipanema is a cleaner beach where interesting 'native' persons go. Leave a Comment

There was a disco, named 'Help!' next to our hotel. It was advertised as 'latin america's biggest disco'. We through we'd go check it out so we paid the $16 cover to go inside. What a disappointment. It was very empty and many women there seemed to be looking for johns. We looked around and found it a bit pathetic, so we left. Avoid Help! at all cost unless you are looking to pay for some local fun. (By the way I hear the local latex is not to be trusted...) Leave a Comment

by mannymiami I treated my buddy for his birthday to what was suppose to be a dinnershow type pf night club where dinner and a live Las Vegas type of show was being shown and when the represenetive of the travel agency showed up he took us to this very poor buffet type of restarant in Ipanema and then after 45 minutes he rushed us off to this place called Plataforma over by this area between Leblon and Ipanema to see this Brazilian dance review (something like the Tropicana night club in Havana). The show was pretty entertaining but everyone in our group was pissed off cause they had told us that it was going to be a dinnershow and not some other cheap restarant at another location. I think it was a bit expensive for the two of us I payed $75 for both. Oh well better luck next time.. Leave a Comment
