  • Greetings,

As has been stated in other entries in this section, common sense rules when traveling especially in Rio de Janeiro.

One thing I would certainly suggest is that you carry a "throw-down" wallet or money clip that could be given to any would-be mugger.

This wallet would contain 20 to 50 Reis (equal to 8 to 17 dollars US at time of this writing) and would be kept separate from your real cash. Giving this up would appease most miscreants should the need arise. Also, never travel with a great deal of cash, just take what you need for the activities of the day.

Another thing to consider if you are one who needs to have a watch; go to eBay and purchase some simple, used (or new) men's or lady's Fossil watch for your trip. You can usually find one for under six dollars and if you don't lose it to a misadventure, you can surely give it away to the doorman at your hotel, the maid who cleans your room or maybe a child. Just a thought.

    Be safe!

    George

    Crime rate is huge
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rio is notorious for having a huge crime rate. Gangs have become more and more popular and violent. Many stores and shops close at 2H00 in the city center due to the gangs. I was reccomended to not even go near the city center after 2H00. Pickpockets are also common in tourist areas as well. I didn't have a problem, but I have heard stories from people I met that have been robbed on the beach. Just be vigilant and don't look lost or helpless. I also reccomend learning Portuguese, but if you can't do that do not speak English (or most other langueges) loudly because that will attract thieves.

    Just stay LOW-KEY

A member of the POLICIA MILITAR (military police), this person maintains patrol vigilence during the city festivities. He is holding an FNL-type (European) rifle. Caliber: 7.62x51mm.
During the carnival parades, Rio city security was supplemented by an increase of military presence. Also contributing to the added security were the unfortunate bombings/fire of local businesses from drug-traffickers in recent weeks. There were no major incidents at the time this picture was taken.
For the most part, although crime exists in the city, being aware of your basic surroundings and having a discrete attitude towards others plays an important role in your safety.

    Beware The Local Fashion Wildlife
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can't get away from them, so be prepared. Yes, the infamous bikini brief. You will usually find these being worn on middle aged, overweight men as they walk down the busiest main street in Rio doing their grocery shopping.

We dropped our clothes off at a local laundry service and "low and behold" look what ended up mixed in with the cleaned clothes. Was it a hint that we needed to adopt the local dress culture, or maybe an item of clothing that was desperately trying to run away from its owner? We may never know the true answer, but prepare yourselves! It's all you can do!

    Rio. Santa Teresa neighborhood. Mugging!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Above Lapa, to the west, is the hilly Santa Teresa neighbourhood, with its narrow, winding streets, stone stairs and turn-of-the-century homes. A favorite among artists and intellectuals, Santa Teresa also hosts an annual arts festival. A nice way to visit the area is to take the scenic Bondinho de Santa Teresa (Santa Teresa streetcar), which has been in operation since 1896. (Don’t take along valuables or cameras—passengers are occasionally mugged.)

Just returned form a trip to Rio. My girlfriend and I were mugged in The Santa Teresa neighbourhood. We lost our camera and I was stabbed in the left shoulder.

    Safety-advices for Rio
  • Tip Rating:
  • While you are in Rio just relax the great atmosphere and do not always think of muggings etc. ...just use common sense and you will probably be fine!

Don't walk down dark lonely streets at night or in parks, there are often people who are looking for someone they could mugg.

At the beaches (not only Copacabana) do not leave anything on your towel while you go swimming or it will be gone.
Better you go without anything heavy to the beach, only your towel, some money to buy something to eat or drink from the beach -vendors (about 10-15 Reais are okay) and yourself, leave your belongings in the hotel-safe cofre).
When you go out only take enough money with you that you will use for that day (around 50 Reais should be fine for the day, unless you want to buy some presents or want to eat in a 5-star rerstaurant).
Take copies of your passports and take them with you when going out, the originals leave in your hotel.
Leave some money in your pockets for the thieves and the rest hidden in a money belt or a hidden pocket.
If someone try to mugg you give them some money, so that they are satisfied and do not try to run away or shouting, ...normally people around or even police-men won't try to help you in this situation...(have always heard this) so it's better you give some money away than to risk that they hurt you in any way!
If you had given some money the thieves normally disappear rather fast to not be catched by the police.

    Be careful with the "favelas"
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you visit Rio, please, never rent a car and drive for yourself as you don't know the city and sometimes you can be lost and arrive in a "favela", a kind of district which is commanded by the traffickers and for sure you won't be welcome there! So, the best that you can do is taking a taxi and thenm enjoy the wonderful city!

    SOME IMPORTANT TIPS ABOUT CARIOCAS&RIO
  • Tip Rating:
  • It's always good to learn some Portuguese before you come!
My friend Kevin, from Boston, told me he learned some Portuguese before he came to visit me in Porto Alegre from the website www.sonia-portuguese.com,you can try,it really makes one's life easier to know some words!
Cariocas often recent what we perceive as the "coldness" in foreigners, who, sometimes are not used to touch each other all the time or getting really physically close to other people when talking..in other hand, what happens sometimes is that tourists may feel that because people here is so warm,it's going to be easy to"make friends"-some will be disapointed by not distinguish between genuine interest and casual socializing:both,
men and women may touch you lightly during a conversation, when greeting or saying goodbye, hugging and kissing in both cheeks-
but this behaviour is NOT a kind of sexual advance! Some small towns in the interior of the state will have more conservative people.
Considering women travelling alone,Rio is perfectly safe, sometimes a male escorting will be needed, but I have been travelled almost all over the country many times myself, and never been harassed and felt perfectly safe!
People may stare at you, sometimes, and MOSTLY out of friendly curiosity only(I said MOSTLY,it's always a good idea to watch out your surrounders)!
It's not recomend to take out of the pockets all your money surrendly to see how much is left or how much you need for this or that,in front of thousands of hungry kids many times..better to ask your concierge or someone in the hotel about the Brazilian currency and maybe put the coins and the notes arranged separately for diferent purposes, than you will be ready to check things "discretly"when at the streets!

    TAXI SCAMS
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you pay for your taxi ride, be sure to get the driver to turn on his overhead light if it is night time, and fan out the currency notes in front of both of you!!! Do not fall for the scam our driver tried on the way home from the Sambadrome ... we handed him a 50 real note and he took it into his lap for 2 seconds and came back with a 5 real note saying WAIT THIS IS A FIVE ... we were 100% sure it had been a 50 ... so he acted all put out and grumpy. My husband could not bear to just walk away so he compromised and gave him 20 real more. So make sure you and the driver look together at the notes you are handing over!!

    Copacabana
  • Tip Rating:
  • An increasingly seedy area. Lots of muggings, especially after dark. Dress down, dont wear an expensive watch or overtly carry a camera.
Prostitutes are everywhere and can be quite brazen.

My advice is to stick to Ipanema and Leblon beaches. Much safer, less tourists and lots of beautiful people.
