Hang-gliding

by robine

For hang-gliding, you can get a bus or cab to the Praia do Pepe in Sao Conrado, from where you'll be taken to the Pedra Bonita. When I went, a few years ago, the price was US$100 (though the flight couldn't be made, because of unfavourable winds). Or you can arrange everything beforehand, through www.justfly.com.br or www.goup.com.br, both recommended as reliable and English-speaking: I understand that both now charge Rs$240, to include hotel pick-up and drop-ff.

Christ the Redeemer

by ATXtraveler

The international symbol of Rio de Janeiro must be the Christ the Redeemer statue that is located just outside the city. At 130 feet tall, this statue stands out on top of a highly religious city. The actual location of the statue is on the Corvocado Mountain, which is located inside the Tijuaca Forest National Park. The history behind this statue was that in or around the 1850's, the idea for the statue was born, but it would take 80 years for it actually be erected. Brazil did not want to build this highly religious statue with public funds, so it was not erected until Brazilian Catholics had donated enough money to fund the statue. It was completed in 1931 and has been a tourist site ever since.

Maracana Stadium - Soccer

by ATXtraveler

Without a doubt, the most important sporting event to attend when in Rio is a soccer match between two local Rio teams. Maracana Stadium is a part of world soccer history, and getting the opportunity to watch futbol with 40,000 other Rio locals is a true treat. Sarah and I wanted to enjoy one of these trips, however we were a little fearful of trying to navigate this madness by ourselves, so we turned to the web. We were able to find a blog from a enterprising citizen of Rio, who volunteers his time to pick up tourists from their hotel, drive them to the game, buy their tickets and then take them safely back home. The gentleman's name was Sergio, and he was very knowledgeable on all things Rio, futbol, and tourism. I would highly recommend his services.

Road trip to the "Finger of God"

by speer

In the Serra dos Orgaos ("The Organ Hills") National Park, you can view the Bell Rock and Dedo de Deus ("God's Finger")! The park was named, "The Organ Hills" because of its rock formations resembling European organ pipes. The "Finger of God" rock formation was so named because it appears to be a giant left hand with the index finger extended. On clear days, it can be seen from the city of Rio de Janeiro. Dedo de Deus is also featured in the background of: the flag of the state of Rio de Janeiro, as well as the flag of the municipality of Guapimirim and the flag of the municipality of Teresopolis.Just off the road on the way to Teresopolis there is parking available for shopping, and taking pictures. Souveniers (such as hammocks) as well as food treats can be purchased there. The park covers areas of both Petropolis and Teresopolis and is about an hour drive from Rio de Janeiro city.

ENJOY YOUR HOTEL IN MARINGA AND SURROUNDINGS

by schurlif

Well , these pictures are about 11 - 12 years old and show us ( my Sao Paulo family then : Charlotte , Emanuel and Benji) in two different hotels then. I can't recall the names of these pousadas , one rustical with wooden chalets, the other one with swimming pool a little bit more refined ( named Maribundo something...) This tip is actually very simple. Maua is very relaxing and slow paced.... you should reserve at least 4 days to get into the rhythm of the place.....There's plenty of time for visiting most interesting places but you should not forget to enjoy the amenities of your pousada , sitting on the terrace , taking a nap with the fire in the fireplace "cracking", pool or a tranquil walk near the pousada . I especially recommend Maua-Maringa-Maromba for a serene little holiday with your kids....If you come to Brazil and just stay in the main tourist attractions like Rio, Salvador...

Parati

by Alless

The small coastal village of Parati is a virtual museum within a tropical paradise. It is located 125 miles southeast of Rio de Janeiro and possesses one of the finest "collections" of classical 18th century Portuguese colonial buildings. Parati is characterized by cobblestone streets and pastel buildings. It has a long pier and small boats are available for day trips to the surrounding islands. In the early 1700's Parati was a major gold shipping port to Portugal. Today it is a major international destination for sophisticated tourists seeking sunshine and spectacular beaches (including snorkling and scuba) all within a classical architectural setting. Automobile traffic is forbidden inside the city in order to preserve the tranquil ambience.

Parati
Teresópolis

by Alless

Teresopolis is Located in the cool Rio de Janeiro mountains overlooking the bay of Rio de Janeiro and set amidst beautiful forested surroundings. Unlike most cities in Brazil there is no beach nor ocean here. But the scenery makes up for it. It is a mountain town with about 150,000 inhabitants, located at 3,000 feet in altitude. The Colina dos Mirantes hill overlooks the city was once the summer residence of the Empress Teresa Cristina and is a great vantage point to see the city and its surrounding area. It is known for its true mountain atmosphere: wonderful panoramas, brisk mountain winds and the warmth of its people.

The God's Finger
Rio de Janeiro

by Alless

Rio de Janeiro was discovered January 1, 1502 by the Portuguese, hence the name River of January. Rio with over 10,000,000 inhabitants it the second largest city in Brazil. While the folks in Sao Paulo labor all day Rio's inhabitants work and play all day and night. Often taking 3 hour lunches to go to the beach. And the beaches, open to all, are there with Ipanema, Copacabana, and countless others. Its unique landscape (mountains on one side ocean on the other) make it one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Indeed it can be called Brazil's emotional capital as well.

Sugar Loaf
Buzios

by Alless

Just 105 miles from Rio de Janeiro, a pleasant 2-hour trip takes you to the peninsula of Buzios, whose more than 20 magnificent beaches and crystal-clear water contrast with the sculptured landscape and exotic vegetation, which thrives in an endless summer. Originally settled by European pirates and slave traders, this mixture of many cultures prospered and became a picturesque fishing village, and was elected one of the 10 most beautiful areas in the world, famous for its unique combination of rustic charm, architectural harmony, incredible beauty and sophisticated boutiques and restaurants. This is the in-place for the discerning traveler in Brazil.
