    Rio de Janeiro-Galeão International Airport (GIG)

    by ATXtraveler Updated Apr 4, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Galeão International Airport is one of the main entry ports into Brazil from most international destinations. Coupled with São Paolo, I would assume a large majority of all international flights land between these two. The airport is also known as Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport, so do not confuse it with the other airports in Rio, which may not have the international flights you are looking for. Up until 2004, most domestic flights were routed to Santos Dumont Regional Airport which is very close to downtown Rio.

    On our particular flight, we flew domestically from Foz do Iguassu, so we landed in the domestic side of the airport, and then flew back out internationally on our return though São Paolo.

    Airlines serving GIG:
    * Aerolineas Argentinas (Buenos Aires-Ezeiza)
    * Air Europa (Madrid)
    * Air France (Paris-Charles de Gaulle)
    * Alitalia (Rome-Fiumicino) [begins march 2008]

    Two airports

    by laura4n8 Updated Nov 16, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    There are two airports in Rio -- the international one and the domestic one (Congonhas). I suggest you fly into the domestic airport because it's right in the city and has an amazing landing and takeoff -- right over the water! Plus, there seems to be more service from/to Sao Paulo.

    Misty points to the short runway of Congonhas
