Beaches

by cachaseiro

Don't miss out on the beaches. They are not just great, but the brazilians really know how to make them a fun place to be.Unlike mosrt other countries the beaches are the center of the social life and therefor mostly full of people doing all sorts of things. The beaches in Brazil is for so much more than just tanning.

Don´t just rush through.

by cachaseiro

You should stay for a while in each place so you get to know the brazilians. They are the biggest attrction in Brazil and they are generally very curious about foreigners and love to hang out with you and invite you to whatever party they are heading for next. That's difficult to say when you consider that Brazil has the best music, the best beaches and the most beautiful women in the world.

Oscar Niemeyer.

by cachaseiro

Oscar Niemeyer is one of the most important persons in the history of Brazil. He is an architect that is first of all known for being the person who was behind the creation of the capital Brasilia, but he has created many buildings and cities in Brazil and for that matter around the world. He was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1907 and is at the time of writing (november 2009) still alive. One of the more controcversial things about Niemeyer is that he has been a member of the communist party for most of his life and at one point even been the leader of the brazilian communist party and been send in to exile at one point because of that. His architecture is very futuristic and very science fiction like it is mostly so that you either love his works or hate them.

Sócrates Story: Meeting a Living Football God

by Kakapo2

-VT member marsistanbul has asked me several times to publish my story about Brazil’s former football star Sócrates on VT, and so, here it is. I have to note that I wrote this story in March 2001, and one little thing has not become reality: Sócrates did not become president of Brazil’s football federation. On the other hand, he has done some more incredible things, like composed a musical named “O futebol”, and published a CD. Although I must admit that the musical surprised me slightly nothing this man ever does can really surprise me because he is so full of surprises and talents. The musical which had its premiere in July 2005 is about football, as the title suggests, and tells of all the drama and beauty that make the game so popular. Sócrates composed eleven songs and collaborated with an established music professor named Kleber Mazziero. A Picture-Perfect RevolutionaryAs an active...

Capoeira

by ValbyDK

Capoeira (Tupi-Guarani word for - clear area) is a blend of martial art, game, and dance originated in Brazil. It is difficult to explain capoeira, but a famous Brazilian has once described it as "a dance which is a fight and a fight which is a dance". Capoeira is originally from the regions of Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo, but I have also seen the dance other places. It was the African slaves who first used capoeira, and it is said that "capoeira was born out of burning desire for freedom". There are to main styles in capoeira: The regional is fast, dynamic and very aggressive. The Angola is geared toward cooperation and dance and is referred to as a game. Participants in capoeira form a circle (roda) within the two players wage a simulated fight (jogo). The most important is not fitness but the ability to observe and find the weak points of an...

Caipirinha

by ValbyDK

You must taste the caipirinha... the national cocktail in Brazil. Caipirinha is made with cachaça, sugar, lime and crushed ice, and is one of the best cocktails I have ever tasted - a very refreshing drink.A caipirinha is only made with cachaça! Made with vodka instead of cachaça, it's a caipirosca - and with rum it's a caipirissima!

Churrasco

by ValbyDK

When you are in Brazil, you must try a typical Brazilian churrasco (a barbecue with beef and grilled meat). The range of barbecued meats include pork (porco), beef (bife), chicken (frango), goat (cabrito), chicken hearts and linguica (a spicy Brazilian sausage). Most of these churrasco restaurants are all-you-can-eat restaurants. The waiters will go around the restaurant with the skewers, slicing the meat on your plate. This serving style is called Espeto Corrido or Rodizio.

Speaking Portuguese

by BlueLlama

One of the great indicators of how generous Brazilian people are is their attitude to foreigners speaking their language. I went to Brazil as a language student, but one who was shy and in the past had been nervous of speaking. Reading, writing - fine. Speaking - stressful.Well, Brazil changed that. People will come up and talk to you, so that even the most reluctant linguist will learn at least some Portuguese. And if you're a student of the language as I was, you'll come on in leaps and bounds. Strangers are keen to teach you local words and find out why you're interested in Portuguese. One interesting thing I noticed was that if you already speak some Portuguese people will assume you're from another part of the country. I was often asked in Salvador if I was a gaucha, or girl from the south. It illustrated to me the huge physical space of Brazil and the differences between its...
