Our route

by toonsarah

Brazil is a large country, and with only a few weeks to spare in which to see something of it we had to choose our route carefully and rely on internal flights to get us around. Rio was a must of course, and we quickly decided on the Amazonian rainforest too, as the great river is synonymous with Brazil. The Falls at Iguaçu were high on my list as I can never resist a waterfall, and we added some more relaxing destinations too – colonial Parati made an attractive side trip from Rio, and the beach at Praia do Forte a great place to wind down at the end of the trip. Finally, it seemed mad to go to Bahia and not spend some time in Salvador, which we knew would show us a very different side to Brazil. And so our itinerary was complete.Of the places we didn’t manage to get to, I would love to have seen Brasilia with its ultra-modern architecture, and the wildlife of the Pantanal. But it’s...

Rio de Janeiro

by traveldave

Known as the Cidade Maravilhosa, or the "Marvelous City," Rio de Janeiro is not the largest or economically most important city in Brazil (Sao Paulo is), and it is no longer even the capital of Brazil (Brasilia is). However, Rio de Janeiro has been described as the heart and soul of the nation. On January 1, 1502, a Portuguese sailor and explorer named Gaspar de Lemos mistook Guanabara Bay for the mouth of a large river and named it Rio de Janeiro, or "River of January." The first Portuguese settlement was establised in 1560 (shortly after the French, who had set up a colony on one of the islands in Guanabara Bay, were expelled). Later, sugar plantations helped Rio de Janeiro become an important settlement in Portuguese Brazil. It was not until an eighteenth-century boom brought about by a gold rush in nearby Minas Gerais (for which the city was the chief port), that Rio de Janeiro became...

the Capital of Brasil

by pepples46

since the second half of the 18th century, Brasil's Governing Authorities considered transfering the Seat of the Goverment from Rio to some inland area, safe from naval attacks. the first Republican Constitution from 1891 condered the Federal Destrict Inland on a rectangle piece of Land in the State of Goias. dry, tree-less Savanna. it took till 1956, after eight years of surveying that then the design and construction of the new Capital began. the then President Jucselino Kubitschek pushed the project fast and furios on a site of 2245 sq miles..5800sq km sparsely inhabited. on a plateau on 1100 meter above sealevel, carved out of the State of Goias and 1200 km from Rio de Janeiro.Lucio Costa won the competion for the urban masterplanOscar Niemeyer the brilliant brasilien Architect designed the bulk of Brasilias buildings and Roberto Burle Marx planned the layout and selection of plant...

Brazilian Slang - 'Clube de Luluzinha'

by peace_prevails

You may hear the expression "Clube da luluzinha" in Brazil. The expression means a gathering "just for girls".it is a famous child cartoon where Luluzinha (see pic) has a club that only girls are allowed. Luluzinha created her club because Bolinha (a boy in the neighborhood ) had created a "Clube do Bolinha", just for boys. Its not clear who created the clube first but i would guess Bolinha first and Luluzinha second....(the revenge of the girls)...

BBM #2 - Best of Brasilian Music - Pagode

by peace_prevails

In the States, if you want the hardest gangta' rap, you gotta go ghetto, hard core, to the people that have lived the violence, the gun shots, having their bike stolen in the morning. Case in point: 50Cent was shot five times - Vanilla Ice probably grew up worried about the milk making his wheaties soggy. The same goes for Pagode - the best music, in my humble opinion, comes from the favela - and those that grew up in the favela. You have to respect people that have come up in such trying circumstances, and when you hear some of this music, you can not help but at least tapping your foot if not breaking out into full dance. I would suggest anything by Zeca Pagodinho (the name says it all - little Pagode). If I were to buy one Pagode album, it would be Millenium: Zeca Pagodinho. (this CD is usually only sold in Brazil but I believe you can order it on Amazon now)You will be hooked....

BBM #1 - Best of Brasilian Music - Samba

by peace_prevails

OK, while I will run the risk of touching a tender bone in some people by suggesting what is the 'best', I am going to name a series of, IMHO, the best artists in several of the myriad forms of music - there are probably a few dozen styles of Brazilian music, if not more - let's start with Samba. Most of what I reccomend can be found on Amazon. If you are going to buy one samba album, buy either:Pure Brazil: Samba Social CluborBrazil Classics 2: O SambaJorge Arag?o's pining and the tap of the cavaquinho will have you hooked on the first listen.

Portuguese - give it a go

by peace_prevails

One of my favorite things about Brasil is how tolerant Brasileiros are with foreginers trying to learn their language. They will just laugh (with) your accent and then help you out. It is nice to go somewhere that English is not ubiquitous... take advantage of this. See my travelogues page for 20 must-know phrases before visiting Brasil.
