Petropolis

Petropolis is a town nearby Rio, where you can visit the summertime residence of Emperor Pedro II (who gave the name to the town), the Catholic University and Santos Dumont house. Santos Dumont was the pioneer of Brazilian aviation. His house is a really odd building, that deserves a visit.Petr?polis es una ciudad cercana a R?o, en donde se puede visitar la residencia de verano del Emperador Pedro II (quien dio el nombre a la ciudad), la Universidad Cat?lica y la casa de Santos Dumont.Santos Dumont fue el pionero de la aviaci?n brasile?a. Brazilian Portuguese: ç

by glabah

The ç character is referred to as the "cedilla", and is pronounced somewhat like a hard English double-s sound. It can be a little like a mixture between an English s and an English z.My appologies for the confusing "Favorite Thing" item at the top of this hint. However, the General Tips part of VirtualTourist is not set up for providing anything other than favorite aspects of a location and none of the other categories were really appropriate for language hints.

Brazilian Portuguese: ão and other nasal vowells

by glabah

ão, as in the largest city in Brazil: São Paulo (Saint Paul). The ~ mark above the vowell means the sound is nasalized. North American English speakers find this a difficult concept because this is not a sound in North American English at all. Try pronouncing the letters "a" while forcing some air through the nose in order to create a sort of "n" sound at the same time.Generally, when followed by another vowell, the nazalized vowell forms a dipthong, and the nazalized sound is continued to the end of the sound. São therefore is pronounced something like "Sow" (not two, like most English speakers do: say-oh) with a nazalized pronounciation throughout the final vowel of the word.My appologies for the confusing "Favorite Thing" item at the top of this hint. However, the General Tips part of VirtualTourist is not set up for providing anything other than favorite aspects of a location and...

Brazilian Portuguese: r and rr

by glabah

r and rr pronounciation:In most cases, in Brazilian Portuguese, r is pronounced a little like the rolling r that North Americans are familiar with from Mexican Spanish. However, the rolling nature of the R sound is not anywhere near as long or as harsh as Mexican Spanish. In Rio de Janeiro, the r is pronounced a little more harshly, with more of a cat-spitting type sound. I've been told this is a little like the German rAt the start of a word (outside Rio de Janeiro) the r is pronounced like a North American English H. Therefore, outisde Rio de Janeiro, the name of the city would actually be pronounced along the line of Hio de Janeiro to the ears of most English speaking North Americans.rr is pronounced like a North American English H. Therefore, terra would be pronounced like teha to the ears of most English speaking North Americans. My appologies for the confusing "Favorite Thing" item...
