Americana

by Bigjones

We landed in Sao Paulo one day of June. But we actually began our trip by visting some friends in Americana, a 150,000 inhabitants city located at about 100km from there. There is not much too see there but it was so much nicer than the huge Sao Paulo and we had so much fun ! As from the start, we realized we wouldn't sleep much and party a lot. We arrived during "la Festa de Peao" (cowboy's festival). We could see cowboys and rodeos on airs of country music. During a second, I thought I had taken the wrong plane and arrived in an other country. This was so different from what I imagined. But then I realized it was typical from that region. Brazil is such a huge country that it's full of contrasts.

Amazing settings

by acemj

Rio de Janeiro is simply the most impressive physical setting I've ever seen for a city. The ocean always adds a large dose of beauty to a city, but Rio also throws in miles of sandy beaches, incredible jagged mountains and isolated, tree covered islands. The waterfalls of Iguacu were also unbelievable and certainly the most beautiful falls I have ever seen. The jungle seems so quiet and peaceful as your fly over it, but then, out of nowhere, this water turns turbulent and explodes out of the jungle in one of nature's most spectacular displays.

Caj? - Cashew

by rui_bijie

Cashews are found growing on cashew trees or "bushes" near the equator. The Cashew tree is closely related to the Mango and Pistachio plants. The cashew origins and grows wild in Brazil.Fortaleza, Brazil, ships the second largest quantity of cashews and the two areas represent over 80 percent of the world supply which is around 4 million cases (50 pounds per case). Brazilian crop harvests in October. The Cashew TreeCashew trees flourish in extreme heat in the tropics and are readily found near the equator. The tree isn't more than 30 feet tall (like an apple or cherry tree) and often they are mistaken for bushes because the limbs spread easily, strike the ground, and reroot themselves. The trunk is gnarled and tortuous, giving the tree an unkempt appearance. The Cashew AppleThe highly unusual cashew fruit consists of both a crab apple (called the cashew apple), and a kidney bean shaped...

Don't be afraid of hot water!

by rui_bijie

Hot water supply is mostly only a small heater directle integrated into the shower head - the power socket right next to it.This might look a little mit frightening. It's quite common in all over Brazil. Don't worry, they use it only in areas with a 100 V power supply. If you get electrified (happened to me twice), it's only a funny feeling in your fingertips ...

Cachaca - where to buy

by rui_bijie

Cachaca is extremely cheap throughout the country. It varies from cheap brands (i.e. 3 R$) to better ones (around 10 R$) or golden ones (aged in wood barrels). Try the more expensive ones pure! (In general Caipirinha might cause more headache the next day than pure Cachaca.)If you want to bring some Cachaca back home, don't wait until the Airport! The Duty Free Stores just offer the high-end brands at international prizes (8 US $ upwards - US $ not R$!!!)!By the way, think about bringing some lemons as well - they are 10 times cheaper than in Europe!

Infectious rhythms -Musica Brasileira

by mangueirense

My foundest memory of Brazil in therms of music is that everywhere you go you listen different styles of music, even on the beach or under the shower ! Everybody is shaking, dancing, jumping, etc. to music..even little childs know how to dance..amazing!Brazilian rhythms will not get lost from your body if you leave the country....you will get infected with some of the dances like Axe or samba, forro or lambada, no doubt!I have been infected myself by axe, lambada, and most of all: Samba! If you would like to get more informations on brazilian music and the different styles there is a nice page under:http://www.slipcue.com/music/brazil/brazillist.htmlwhich explains it all in english.Another good page (also in english) and with sound-examples is:http://www2.uol.com.br/allbrazilianmusic/Just select an artist or a style at the left side of the page and drift away for a while ;-)

Eating: Churrasco rodizio

by rui_bijie

This is an espeacially fine way of dining (may be not if you are a Vegetarian): waiters will bring barbecued meet and a variety of other goodies - all you can eat. Besides that you can help yourself at an extremely large salad buffet (also available: side dishes).Rodizio is the name for the serving system - they come to offer item after item till you can eat no more. The rules: You'll get a small card - red on the one side, green on the other. As long as the card shows the green side, the waiters will come along with the meat. To stop this (if you need a pause) just turn it over.

Colonial pains, riches and legacy

by acemj

While Brazil's native Indian population did not leave dramatic evidence of their past like the Maya and Inca, there were nearly six million here when the Portuguese arrived in the early 16th century. Sadly, there are only about 200,000 remaining in Brazil. The Portuguese legacy, on the other hand, is much more pronounced and can be seen throughout the country in its culture and architecture. Over time, African slaves began to replace the native Indians and the cultural influences of these slaves is also easy to see (and hear) all over the land. The slaves helped to contribute to Brazil's booming economy. Initially slave trading and sugar were the primary revenue generators, but today coffee is the largest export. The riches generated over the years not only went to beautifying the churches and palaces of Portugal, but also many here in Brazil.

Las Cataratas do Iguacu are truly spectacular. The sweeping views of the 275 separate falls that make up the park are unbelievable and if at all possible, a visit here should be on your travel itinerary.

Natural settings

One day, I'll have to return to Brazil and venture northward to the Amazon. I'd love to cruise through isolated landscapes and experiences pristine natural settings. The Rio Iguacu was the closest I came to such serenity.
