The Alquimista II
by jrodpad I don’t remember the cost of the tour, but if you book in advance, through your pousada, you can get a discounted rate. The shuttle-bus dropped us at the port where we rented snorkel equipment at a small stand near the dock for R$5 per day (mask & snorkel). We rented the equipment for the duration of our stay; you can pre-pay at the stand and return the equipment at your pousada the day you leave the island. Renting a mask and snorkel is a must (for the germ-phobic, you get your own mouthpiece in a pre-sealed plastic pouch). We then met Juliana, our tour guide, and boarded the boat (the “Alquimista II”) with about six others. The ride took 4 hours (round-trip). We saw all of the beaches on the north shore of the island. We got up-close with the 2 brothers and many other small islands and we stopped by a naturally occurring rock arch, where the space under the arch forms the shape of the country of Brazil. We then stopped for a while, near sancho beach for some snorkeling along the reefs. We swam through school after school of tropical fish! I even saw a small shark along the bottom. The reefs off of Sancho beach offered the largest variety and concentration of fish of all of the beaches we snorkeled at durring our trip.
On our return trip we stopped near a small island that was riddled with caves; when the waves entered and exited the caves, it produced a sound like a lion’s roar.
You don’t need to wear much more than a bathing suit. Definitely wear sun block; while this is a good tip for anytime you leave your pousada during the daytime, it is especially necessary for the boat tour. A hat and sunglasses are a good idea too, but make sure they’re tied down or they’ll blow away.
The tour is filled with photo-ops, so bring your camera equipment. I would suggest keeping a big zip-lock bag at the ready, or use a splash resistant camera to keep the water away from your cameras!
I would recommend this tour to anyone as the views and the snorkeling and the commentary about the island are well worth the price. Leave a Comment
