 | Ilha de Fernando de Noronha Warnings or Dangers | Tips 1 - 10 of 11 | |
Fernando de Noronha is a marine sanctuary. Care is taken to prevent any objects that might endanger the health of the resident wildlife from falling into the water. Hold your hat firmly on your head while on a moving boat or you may have to fish it out of the water so that a dolphin or turtle does not try to eat it! Leave a Comment

Well, there are also some other things to consider in Noronha, concerning budget....the island is small, one hour away from the continent by plane, aprox. 2 to 3 days on boat. The island has everything you might need for sale, but many things sold are actually from the continent and therefore, more expensive. Water for example, is not abundant in Noronha, and the mineral water used for drinking comes from Pernambuco...some fruits, and also the majority of eletronics arrive on boat, from the bay of Santo Antonio. So, if you want to spend the least money possible, bring all camera films, sun protector, towels, sun glasses, medicine you might need and higien products from the continent, since the price can be 50% higher in Noronha.... Water is difficult to get in the island, so be economic....a two hour bath is not reccomended hehehehe. About banks, thereīs only one bank in the island, called Banco do Brasil, in Vila dos Remedios....exchange of money can be very difficult and very expensive as well....so before arriving, take brazilian currency with you!!! Of course, if Noronha did not have any impediment, it would no longer have the untouched, thrilling environment that enchant so many... One thing that really controls the permanence of tourists in Noronha is the preservation tax....it consists of a daily fee you have to pay right at the arrival. This is one reason why you must have a stablished time of stay in the island, and why so many people donīt stay for 20 days on Noronha, and therefore leave so sad.... =( snif.... The tax is constantly actualized, and each day of permanence is a higher price added.... Who pays it? Everyone. And the price is the same for everyone!! Unless you are an habitant or coming with a job on the island, you will pay the tax. Not paying results in a very substantial fee! This money is directed to the preservation of the island and is a very succesfull way to keep a regular number of tourists, since the "invasion" was already disturbing the island environment. Then, when you are finantially planning your vacations, donīt forget to add the daily tax in your calculator...check out the price list here. But donīt be sad....the island is not big and in four days you will have seen everything!!! Leave a Comment

Well, never forget Noronha is now considered a National Maritime Park, a natural pratrimonium the government and all the locals wish to preserve... The rules for preservation on the island are very, VERY strict. Any attempt against nature is prohibited in the island and therefore, as e defense many oportunities for tourists will be closed down. One good example is whatīs been happening with Praia do Atalaia, a great spot for snorkel that because of the aggression to the fauna, the number of visitants was reduced to 30 per day, and now they are wondering whether they should close the access completely. On other occasion, the government decided to close the ascent to the top of Morro do Pico, since tourists decided to write their names on the rock, as if they were in their home..... Then came the preservation tax, and the prohibition of swimming next to dolphins.... And there are many other stories like that, that really makes you want to discover who were those people and chase them to kick their asses. =P Camping on the beach is prohibited, any harassement to animals is completely prohibited, throwing garbage on the water or on the beach is a reason for penalties (fees, etc) and rules are rules... We should not forget that the access to this island depends solely on our behaviour and that the more stupid things we do, the more distant Noronha will get from us. The government is willing to preserve this paradise, no matter what it takes to do it! So, respect their will! Leave a Comment

If you are worried about getting robbed or suffer from any kind of violence, definately in Noronha you shouldnīt be concerned... This island is small, all locals know each other, so there is no way a local could steal from someone without being caught, unless itīs a crazy tourist that doesnīt know the island is a military base hehehe...there hasnīt been till this moment registers of crime... A local told me once, he thought he was the first victim on the island, since he had parked his bicycle in front of his house and it had vanished...then some few hours later his friend came back riding his bike....he had borrowed it for an emergency....=P What you must take care is not to get injuries...donīt go climbing cliffs without guidance, since thereīs a hospital for first aid only.... If you see a warning saying .." AREA BELONG TO IBAMA " (the nature protection organization) or " SWIMMING IS STRICTLY FORBIDEN,AREA FOR WILDLIFE OBSERVATION ONLY ",etc.. Don't try to be the clever one who thinks what a bad luck and coincidence that the guy on duty this morning will not be around, because they are,and the penalties can be very painfull, sometimes,in the worse ocasions of infringements, they can even put you in the next flight out of the place! And,as I always say:the animals are the inhabitants,we are the intruders!! Leave a Comment

Remember to take enough Reais with us: the credit cards are acceped only in some luxury pousada, In the island there is only the banco do Brasil in the main square of Villa dos Remadios, without exchange bureau, only national teller. But if u need more money now there is an international teller inthe airport, rememeber that the airport close at 11 pm. If the teller is empty(!) u can change money to the scupa dive shop on thel left of the church in Villa dos REmedios, the exchange is bad but if u need money......!!!!!!! Leave a Comment

Fernando de Noronha is proud to be criminal free. You can actually leave your bike without a lock (don't try this in Rotterdam) and no reports of pickpockets have been made. There are ofcourse five policeofficers to take care of all that. The only thing that happened to me, is that after a long walk you come back to your buggy to find it won't start. There will be someone who happen to be around to fix it. He won't charge you anything, but you can imagine a lot of tourists will gladly pay something. Since i also know something about cars, I just asked him where the battery was so i could connect the wire again. Leave a Comment
