Going Fishing - DO IT!

by Singlechick

One thing I regret NOT doing is actually throwing out a net or climbing into an inviting fishing boat. Maybe next time around I can leave the cam at home and catch some dinner!!! This is Tony, a local with a catch of the morning. His barraca is on Rua Pirui.

Capoeira, the traditional fight

by perfectly_zen

If you are coming to the northeast of brazil you´ll have a great chance to watch a performance of Capoeira outdoors.....It´s really something you can´t miss....Capoeira looks like a sincronized dance, since the fighters jump in the air, move their arms, clap hands and sing, but it´s actually a fight....This strange "dance" was created by the slaves during colonization. When they wanted to fight for some reason, they used to pretend to be dancing so that they wouldn´t be punished later...There is usually the background music during the fight, with the sound of "berimbau", a musical instrument that consists in an iron string attached to a long piece of wood and a ceramic pot, making metalic sounds...You´ll find much of this in the state of Bahia, Ceará but it´s actually in all parts of the country....

Poverty

by pepples46

Brasil and in fact in the whole of South America, Poverty shows its ugly face one actually can't overlook.. it makes one sad.especially the Native People live now, since the reservations have been closed, in a sad state of poverty, and no where to go, no land of there own, in their own country......out of bounce I'd say, society in generally is struggleing in Brasil...a rich Country, yet the balance of the have's and have not still terribly lopsided

Ribbons in Salvador -- Cute or Annoying?

by dibenjamin

Maybe it's fun to have these ribbons tied on your wrist for good luck. I am inclined to think it's annoying and a bit of a scam -- people approach you all over Pelourinho with these ribbons, tell you it's a gift, and then ask for money once it's on your wrist. I mean, it's only 1 real but still.I have found that if you say no abruptly like you mean it and keep walking, they pretty much leave you alone. Here's a picture of my husband getting one.

Beach Kiosks are Popular in Rio

by dibenjamin

I really like the coco water, which you drink directly out of the coconut, but they have all sorts of refreshments including cold cerveja and guarana (a soft drink made from a Brazilian fruit that is considered a stimulant). One time, people were grilling meat and rolling it in farofa (which is manioc flour, and is a Brazilian specialty) at one of the kiosks, and they very generously invited us to join them.

Samba

by tini58de

Samba seems to be THE expression of lifestyle in Brazil! It is the most popular dance in Brazil and comes from African rhythms and movements. The best time to experience the music and dance of Brazil is during Carnival. Well, since we arrived a week after the Carnival, we went to a Samba Show - and I loved it! Beautiful costumes - really awesome!

clapp your hands

by pepples46

visiting the neighbour our even a good friend, clapping your hands let them know you arrived at their property, a bell is seldom used..and as a greeting in general women kiss three times left right on the cheek....man shake hands or good friend have a hug...and this is related to the old days when man where wearing guns and knifes...a quick check, did he come in Peace and left the weapons at home.

Guarana

by pepples46

Brasil's answer to Coca Cola.the first years in the early 70's where not a huge success, but slowy people warmed up to the Softdrink with a difference. kind of sweetish drink and the taste..tropical, but very rich on minerals and quite healthy.the plant as such is grown in Brasil, kind of woody wine.it uses a tree as host.the German medical Botanist Paullini found out about the plant and gave it its name:Paullinia cupanago to the webpage below, for good infos, pic is from their webside and shows a bunch of Guarana Fruits with its very characteristic black eye
