Serra dos Órgãos National Park

by traveldave

Located about 56 miles (90 kilometers) northeast of Rio de Janeiro, the 27,182-acre (11,000-hectare) Serra dos Órgãos National Park was established in 1939 to protect some Atlantic rainforest, the numerous springs and waterfalls that dot the area, and spectacular granite peaks. The park was the third national park in Brazil.Serra dos Órgãos is an offshoot of the larger Serra do Mar mountain range that extends for about 620 miles (1,000 kilometers) along the southeast coast of Brazil. The park is dominated by rugged and steep granite mountains. Ten peaks are over 6,560 feet (2,000 meters) in height, and the tallest in the park is the 7,424-foot (2,263-meter) Pedra do Sino. Many of the peaks look like steep-sided spires, fingers, or organ pipes. Serra dos Órgãos actually means "Mountain Range of the Organs" because early Portuguese settlers thought the peaks resembled the organ pipes seen...

Guapi Açu Ecological Reserve

by traveldave

Located in the mountains about 37 miles (60 kilometers) northeast of Rio de Janeiro, the Guapi Açu Ecological Reserve was established in 2002 by the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest Trust as a wetland restoration project, and to protect fragments of the disappearing Atlantic rainforest. The reserve was originally called the Serra do Mar Ecological Reserve, but was renamed Guapi Açu, after a Tupi Indian village that was once located nearby. Historically, the Atlantic rainforest, which is very similar ecologically to the Amazon rainforest, covered almost all of the Serra do Mar, a 620-mile (1,000-kilometer) mountain range that extends along the southeast coastline of Brazil. Because the southeast coast is where most of the people of Brazil live, the Atlantic rainforest has been cleared over the centuries until only about six percent of the original forest remains today, making it one of the...

The Hotel Quitandinha

by traveldave

Located about five miles (eight kilometers) outside of Petrópolis, the Hotel Quitandinha was constructed in 1944 by entrepreneur Joaquim Rolla to be the largest hotel-casino complex in Latin America. It was constructed in the French-Norman style of architecture, which was popular at that time and place due to large numbers of German immigrants who settled in the area. The six-story building contains 440 rooms (originally hotel rooms but now apartments) and 13 large halls. Unfortunately, a few months after the hotel's inauguration, gambling was outlawed by the administration of then-President Eurico Dutra. In order to protect his investment, Joaquim Rolla sold the rooms as private apartments. Nowadays, the building serves as a condominium and social club. It also hosts conferences, concerts, and other events. It has a restaurant that is open to the public, as well as the largest...

Bird Park, Iguazú

by patagoniapaul

The bird park at Iguazu is just before you get to the entrance to the park. After paying the rather steep entrance fee -I believe about US$20p.p we went into the first part where some rare birds are kept in cages. The first impressions were disappointing but keep going! Soon you enter a wonderworld of birds where the stragest creatures peep through the lush leaves. There were toucans of all colours and descritions and brightly feathered macaws. Some of these birds were in a huge cage that one can enter. Plese note: Remove all jewelery before entering! There are also a few reptiles but this place is about birds. The park is located 14km from Foz do Iguazú centre.Open: 8.30 - 18.00 in summer, 17.00 in winter.

European Settlements

by pepples46

many european immigrants made the South of that big Country their home. Parana..Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul should not be missed. Have a look where the Coffee grows Rodondia/Parana....Great Beaches near Florianopolis/Santa Catarina, and from there is a short trip to Blumenau, big Octoberfest, like Munich..and last but not least Gramado..in the Mountains easy to travel from Novo Hamburgo by Bus.and the Capital of Rio Grande do Sul,Porto Alegre should not be missed, if possible in Spring, Sept-Nov. with it's Cheeryblossoms. P.A. is the Gateway to Uruguay and Argentina, by Bus or Plan. I prefered the Bus, to get the know the Scenerie and the People, and a cheap way to get from A to B.

I realy liked the areahave a look at the south of Brasil, worth a trip

The Sertao.

by cachaseiro

If you go inland from one of the main towns in the north east you reach the Sertao within a few hours. It's a very poor part of Brazil where it hardly ever rains, but you will find the nicest people on the planet there.Speaking portugese is very useful in this part of brazil since almost no one learns english there. This is the true heart of Brazil in my opinion and a very uniqe place to visit.
