Carandiru

by dearn

Carandiru in one of South America's most imfamous prisons where during a riot 111 inmates were murdered by over-eager riot police. This has since been made into a movie by Hector Babenko based on the memoirs written by Drauzio Varella who was the Doctor working in this prison.Perhaps not a tourist spot but I found it very interesting walking through the now abandoned prison and seeing the "art" decorating the walls of the prisoners cells. Beware of the many syringes laying the the surrounding rubble.

CARAVELAS: PARQUE NACIONAL DE ABROLHOS

by swesn

Caravelas is the launching pad to head out to the ocean for some great activities in Parque Nacional de Abrolhos, 70km off.Abrolhos is Brazil's first Marine Park. You can either go scuba-diving or whale-watching. There are many islands around the archipelago but you cannot camp on them. You either take one-day boat trips or you live a few days on the boats. You would be able to stop by some islands for some really close-up views of the excellent wildlife. For whale-watching, best times are November to March. For diving, best times are December to April.

Peaks south of Cunha

by Saagar

Some of the best views of the Atlantic Rainforest between Rio and Sao Paulo can be had if you first hit the small town of Cunha, and then move on toward the coast on a single country road. At one point there is an obvious parking place and a side road that goes steeply uphill. Proceed up here by foot for 20 minutes or so and you get this view!

Lencois Maranhenses National Park

by coconutwireless

You can save a good deal of of money by taking the local long distance bus fro Sao Luiz to Barreirinhas and booking your own trip to the park after you arrive. See my travelogue for Lencois Maranhenses National Park We booked with EcoDunas the website below is in Portuguese but you can e-mail and they can probably answer (or find someone) in English. There are many companies that can make the arrangements as there are only a few companies that actually have the 4-wheel drive trucks that are necessary to navigate the sand ruts.

I would have to say that we...

by deadites

I would have to say that we had the best time in Praia do Estaleiro, part of the Balneario do Camboriu Interpraia system, which is definitely off the beaten path. There was one main road with a few street lights, no phones. Just the beach and the company....The local restaurant was a timber shack with plastic for windows to prevent the wind from blowing your food away, and a few nailed together pieces of metal for the roof. The food was AWESOME and plentiful. I, of course, downed lots of Guarana with my dinner, which meant I was awake all night! If you get to the restaurant early enough you can see the fisherman bringing in the night's meals. We were eating dinner one night and a tropical storm blew in. There went the plastic, and most of the metal roof, followed by the electricity! It was fun making our way back to the pousada in the pitch black, wind and rain; wait for lightning, walk a...

Paraguay

by acemj

I'm not sure if I'm actually recommending Paraguay to everyone, but for the brave and adventurous it might be worth a visit. The country is on many dubious lists (for example, the list of the world's most corrupt governments) yet there are parts that are very beautiful to visit. I only spent a few hours in Ciudad del Este, a corrupt and dangerous border town with Foz do Iguacu in Brazil. On the bright side, there are some interesting shopping opportunities in Ciudad del Este.
