Uruguay is just to the south of Brazil and I spent a half day here visiting a fellow VTer and exploring the quaint colonial town of Colonia del Sacramento (makes a perfect excursion from Buenos Aires). Though, I didn't visit, Uruguay's capital Montevideo would also be a great choice.
Brazil's neighboring Argentina makes a great off the beaten path location for exploration. I paid a visit to Puerto Iguazu while visiting the famous waterfalls there and also spent some time in Buenos Aires, where European architecture and South American spirit mingle energetically making it a great travel destination.

This is the largest reservoir in Brazil in terms of surface area, situated in the north of the State of Bahia. The dam was built in the hydrologic basin of the River Sao Francisco at a distance of 748 km from its source and 1,912 km from its estuary on the Atlantic coast. The power generation was started on 31 November 1979.
The Petrolina-Juazeiro area ( São Francisco Valley) has emerged as a productive farming region known as "New California." It produces fruits such as melons, grapes, and mangoes, as well as tomato pulp, cotton, wine, sugar, and alcohol for the national and international markets.
São Francisco Valley, Pernambuco, is a large-scale fruit-producing region. By employing modern irrigation techniques, processes and equipment, the region produce tons of mango and grapes , which produce is sold within Brazil and exported regularly to the United States and Europe.
Pernambuco is chiefly agricultural, the lowlands being devoted to sugar and fruit, with coffee in some of the more elevated localities, the agreste region to cotton, tobacco, Indian corn, beans and stock, and the sertao to grazing and in some localities to cotton. Sugar, molasses, rum (aguardenle or cachaca), tobacco ,and fruit are largely exported. Coco-nuts, cacao, bananas, mangoes and other tropical fruits are produced in profusion.
A Sunday trip to Embú Market in the village of Embú, 30 kilometers from the city center allowed me to purchase some gifts to take to the folk back home and proved to be an enjoyable afternoon. This handicraft market is where local Sao Paulo residents go to buy their craft work products and the variety on offer her is truly impressive. Woodcarvings, semi-precious Brazilian stone, rustic furniture, ceramics, feathered wind chimes, glass paper weights with colourful butterflies enclosed, everything is here and very cheap.
