Ibirapuera Park, not exactly off the beaten path

by dearn

My first day out in Sao Paulo I was taken to Ibirapuera Park which is one of Sao Paulo’s largest parks at over 1.6 million square meters and attracts over 200,000 visitors on an average weekend so not exactly off the beaten path or an unknown place. The park was designed by Brazilian architect, Oscar Niemeyer, and landscape artist, Burle Marx. Its truly beautiful here, it’s like an oasis in a concrete jungle. Green grass, towering trees, lakes full of fish with swans skimming gracefully across the surface. There are cycle lanes in the park and these seem to be very popular. You can easily lose a whole day in this park; it’s so relaxing.

Boat trip to Ilha Grande

by selfishman

Along the strip there are people who sell tours to Corcovado mountain,Sugarloaf, Ilha Grande etc...I decided to get out of Rio for the day and go to Ilha Grande, about two hours south of Rio. The cost was I think 80 Brazillian Reals about $20 US dollars for the whole day...including transport, guided tour, boat ride, and lunch.First of all waking up at 7:00 AM to catch the bus was not easy but anyway...I get on the bus with no A/C and the windows won't open but then we transfer to another bus with nice reclining seats, and most important A/C.The ride down south was amazing in itself. We went through some of the most beautiful cuntryside I've ever seen and we also saw a lot of the country's poverty. Of course I ran out of film right before this trip so unfortunately I can't provide any pictures...sorry.Anyway, I met a guy from London a group of girls from Washington D.C and a couple guys...

ILHA DO MEL : ISLAND PARADISE

by swesn

Ilha do Mel (Honey Island) is an island roughly shaped like the number '8'. The side facing Brazil has little waves. The side facing Atlantic has crashing, pounding waves the entire day. The thinnest section of the '8' is called Nova Brazilia. It is sand-to-sand and one day, erosion from the waves may cut the island into two. There are no roads or cars on this island. Everyone walks around in flip-flops or bare-footed across the sand. On weekends, the island is very crowded with Brazilians from nearby Sao Paulo but on other days, it is very tranquil. There are lovely walks around the island alternating between headlands and sandy beaches. Some sections (from Encantadas to Nova Brazilia) cannot be walked and one might have to rent boats to get across or head back the long way.I love this island very much. From Curitiba, take the 4-hour scenic train (only available from Thursday to Sunday)...

BONITO IS MUITO BONITO

by swesn

Bonito is a small town about halfway between Campo Grande and the Pantanal. It is surrounded by superb natural beauties like subterranean caves with lakes, lush forests, gorgeous waterfalls and impossibly crystal-clear rivers (where you swim side by side with huge fishes). As these natural attractions are on private land, everyone has to go with guides and the daily number is limited to minimize impact on these pristine places. The tours are not cheap and no transportation is provided. So, if you stay at the HI hostel, they can help reserve your name for the next day’s tour and organize transportation to be shared with the rest of the people at the hostel.Unmissable tours include snorkelling down RIO DA PRATA and ABISMO DE ANHUMAS which is an abseil into a 72m abyss and then a snorkel in the subterranean lake (what you see is INCREDIBLE!!).Both experiences are TWO OF THE BEST I had ever...

LENCOIS : PARQUE NACIONAL DA CHAPADA DIAMANTINA

by swesn

The park offers many trails for hiking and wonderful views all around. It also has a very interesting geology that will excite geology students and rock aficionados. The round white, yellowish and grey rocks are embedded into pink rock-bed. Due to erosion from the river, the round embedded rocks are smothened out so every rock-bed looks like slabs of floor tiles. The river water is also yellowish-red in colour. There are waterfalls everywhere and the layers of rock strata, forming overhanging rocks make good shelters from the night-rain. Many of these flat sloping strata of rocks look like 'beaches' (without sand). So, you can basically find a flat strata in the next section of the river and make it your own private beach for the evening as you cool down from the hike and enjoy the sound of the rushing river and waterfalls. Perfect! There are several trails. A 3-day walk takes you from...

Santo Antonio do Rio Grande

by hmoitta

Santo Antonio do Rio Grande, small village about 5 hours from Rio where you can walk across the farms to waterfalls and mountains. If you go by car you can go to Visconde de Mauá and there to Mirantão and Santo Antonio; by bus you have to go to Bocaina de Minas and there take another bus to Santo Antonio. There you can rent a room and eat in Beti's guesthouse.

Catch a glipmse of the simple life

by scarm

It is really interesting for a tourist to see the locals happily going about their daily toil. They seem to be happy, but really they do not have any choice but to make the best of their situation. I really do not consiider this to be an idillic lifestyle, as it can be very frustrating for those at a subsistence level to cope with difficulties. It is well accepted that the public medical system is abysmal, as is the public primary education system. I have been told that scheduling an appoiintment is a trauma in itself, as one waits in a long line to schedule a doctor visit two weeks away, and when the appointment time comes, one must wait in a long line in a run down, noisy, shabby, open-air building to see a doctor with out of date equipiment. People with money can afford to go to an upscale private physician.

Araucária Trees - A Brazilian Treasure

by scarm

The Araucária is most often associated with the south of Brasil, especially the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina, but it can also be found in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santo, and Minas Gerais. This pre-historic looking species is a type of pine, and its appearance is distinctive and familiar to the residents of this country. In the past, the species was clear-cut in many areas as a fuel and building material, but today it is a protected species, and is undergoing a re-surgance. It is estimated that fewer than 1% of the original Araucária forests remain. Near the city of Guarapuava in the state of Paraná, there is a small Araucária reserve, where one can learn more about the species, and its near extinction. The ecological reserve has about 3800 oild growth natural Araucária trees and rich and varied fauna. The park occupies an area of 100 hectares. It is...
