    have a delicious Caipirinha...
    by mangueirense
Caipirinha is the most traditional Brazilian drink prepared with cachaça (most famous cachaca is "51" or "Pitu"). It is a lime and sugarcane drink and throu the years it became famous all over Europe and the US. I guess you could say it USED TO be Brazil's best-kept secret, now it's the connoisseur's cocktail of choice from New York City to Tokio, commanding high prices.
In Brazil people use to drink lot's of caipirinhas while they make churasco (barbecue) or simply go out at night.

    Recipe for Caipirinha:

    1 lime
    2 ounces of cachaça
    Sugar to taste
    Ice cubes

Wash the lime and roll it on the board to loosen the juices. Cut the lime into pieces and place them in a glass. Sprinkle with the sugar and crush the pieces (pulp side up) with a pestle. (We have a long, wooden one from Brazil, made specifically for this purpose.) Just enough to release the juice, otherwise it'll get bitter. Add the cachaça and stir to mix. Add the ice and stir again. It is delicious and potent!

You absolutely have to taste Caipirinha in Brazil..if you do not like it with cachaca there are many many other methods and recipes how brazilians prepare Caipirinhas : they use Vodka, white rum, Pineapples and other fruits for to have another taste on it! Yummy!!!

If you can't find cachaça where you live, use a good vodka. The drink will then be called "caipiroska". No vodka? Use white rum and you will have a "caipiríssima". Other words for "cachaca" are : pinga, caninha, branquinha, malvada.

    El Torro Loco: CHURRASCARIA!

  • Brazilian Churrascaria's are very unique. And very cheap. El Torro Loco is probably upscale for Manaus and you can eat and drink all you can put down for less than Brazilian R$30 per person.

    Everything
The leanest filet I have ever eaten.
    Really good frango(poultry)
Caf'e(Brazilian cafe is potent enough to cause you many sleepless nights).
And the all you can drink beer!

If you like seafood, then Brazil is your kinda place.
Small restaurants are scatterd along most beaches and generally serve excellent seafood.
It´s usually just a little shack and then some chairs and tables on the beach, but the food is freshly cooked and the setting fantastic, so there is no reason why you should not go for that experience.

I´m a fish eater, but if you like crab and lobster then you are in paradise.

I found some great food in the town of Foz do Iguacu. A definite recommendation is Restaurante Zaragoza, a Spanish-inspired place that features some wonderful fresh fish from the surrounding rivers. For an inexpensive meal, you should also try a sandwich and a suco (fresh juice) from Barbarela. See my Foz do Iguacu page for details.

Salvador was my favorite place for food in Brazil. The African-influenced cuisine is spicier and richer than in other parts of the country and the seafood that is plentiful here is always fresh and delicious. Check out my Salvador da Bahia page for specific recommendations, but wherever you decide to eat, be sure to try moqueca. It is basically an African-inspired seafood stew. Much of the flavor comes from the dende oil, which has a distinctive and rich flavor and is used heavily in Bahia (the state in which Salvador is the capital).

Pão de Queijo is epidemic in Brazil =)
It´s a type of little, yellow bread, created in the state of Minas Gerais (by the way, people from Minas are in my opinion the best cookers in the country). It´s made out of butter, typical powder ("polvilho") and lots of cheese, making it crispy on the outside, but soft in the middle.
This bread is really tasty, a great option for a little lunch, and usually cheap....
You just can´t miss it.....it works well with brazilian coffee =)
Try the Minas cheese as well!!!

As I just mentioned the brazilian fast food (or tipical american one) I also have to tell you that in Brazil there are a lot of filials from arabish fast food, called Habib's.
The food there is very very delicious too, all those little salted things (salgadinhos) like "kibe", "pastel", and "esfihas", not to tell you that they also offers Sanduiches and of course delicious sweety things like "Mousse de Chocolat" and "Creme de Papaia".
So if you come along of one filial enter it and taste of the food....yummmyyyyy!!!

    Feijoada

  • If you come to Brazil, this is one of the dishes you must try!!! Feijoada is one of the most famous brazilian dishes, and it´s sooooo good heheheh =P
This dish is made of black beans, pork meat and dry meat; those ingredients are all cooked together....there are many variations of this dish: some people don´t put the other parts of the pig (like the foot....blerc) and prefer to use only the dry meat....some feijoadas have chili, others don´t, etc....but they are all good! Feijoada is usually eaten with rice, sliced kale and oranges....Ah! And of course, the caipirinha hehehe
There an interesting history behind this meal: it was originaly created by the slaves, during the time of colonization. The most powerfull had for meal the most noble parts of meat, while left for the slaves the remainings. the slaves than cooked those rests of meat with beans (usually black, that weren´t used by their owners)...then, feijoada was born!!!

If you want to have a taste of brazil in your home, here´s one example of recipe:
    1 lb. black beans
    1 lb. smoked ham hocks
1 of each: pork foot, ear, tail, tongue (optional)
1 lb. Mexican "chorizo," "pepperoni" or Brazilian "linguiça"
1/2 lb. Chunk of lean Canadian bacon or Brazilian "carne seca"(dry meat)
1/2 lb. Smoked pork or beef ribs
    3-4 strips of smoked bacon
    1/2 lb. lean pork
    1/2 lb. lean beef
    1 large onion
    4 garlic cloves
2 tablespoons of olive or vegetable oil
    1 tablespoon vinegar
    salt to taste
    black pepper
hot sauce (optional)/ "cachaça" just for a taste
Soak beans overnight in large container. Next morning, cook beans for 4-5 hours at low heat. Place ham hocks, chorizo, ribs and Canadian bacon in deep pan with plenty of water and bring to a boil. Change water and bring to a new boil, repeating the procedure at least three times to tenderize cured meats and remove excess fat. In a large frying pan saut‚ onion and garlic using either vegetable or olive oil (smoked bacon strips optional) for two or three minutes. Toss in cubed pork and beef. Saut‚ an additional two-three minutes.
Mash 5-l0 tablespoons of beans and add to large pot. The resulting paste will thicken sauce. Add two tablespoons of olive oil, three garlic cloves all chopped-up or mashed, along with a tablespoon of white vinegar and a teaspoon of red-hot pepper. Stir, heat over medium fire for two-three minutes, then transfer to contents of frying pan. (You may use two frying pans, if necessary) Let simmer for l0-l5 minutes. Add contents of frying pan(s) to the beans and let boil at medium heat for 1-2 hours.

There are plenty of good restaurants in Rio, although during my stay I didn't find anything truly exceptional or overly noteworthy. My advice is to ask the locals (the bellhops, taxi drivers and others you encounter) and of course, local VTers for their suggestions. However, I did find some excellent feijoada , the national dish of Brazil in Ipanema, so check out my Rio page for details.

You should definitely try some seafood while in Rio. This photo was taken at Barril 1800 along the beach in Ipanema, where we enjoyed some great barbecued shrimp.
