Many restaurants in Brazil have something that is not on the menu - it is called 'prato feito' . It usually is much cheaper than the going price per kilo but the catch is that the restaurant owner or server gets to decide what goes on the plate. You can make suggestions, but not too worry - it is usually all good anyhow. Ask it they have prato feito on your next trip to a por kilo restaurant. Feijoada is one of the most famous brazilian dishes, and it´s sooooo good heheheh =PThis dish is made of black beans, pork meat and dry meat; those ingredients are all cooked together....there are many variations of this dish: some people don´t put the other parts of the pig (like the foot....blerc) and prefer to use only the dry meat....some feijoadas have chili, others don´t, etc....but they are all good! Feijoada is usually eaten with rice, sliced kale and oranges....Ah! Pão de Queijo is epidemic in Brazil =)It´s a type of little, yellow bread, created in the state of Minas Gerais (by the way, people from Minas are in my opinion the best cookers in the country). It´s made out of butter, typical powder ("polvilho") and lots of cheese, making it crispy on the outside, but soft in the middle. This bread is really tasty, a great option for a little lunch, and usually cheap....You just can´t miss it.....it works well with brazilian coffee =)Try the Minas cheese as well!!!
This sweet is always present in every brazilian birthday party, in all parts of brazil....and to tell you the truth i haven´t met anyone so far who does not like "brigadeiro"....It´s a very practical dessert, you can find it at supermarkets, in cans, at bakeries, parties or on the streets...and it´s incredibly cheap!!!You can try this at your house if you wish...it´s very simple...all you need is a can of condensed milk and chocolate powder for the sweet, and pieces of chocolate to cover it.... Recipe : Put the condensed milk and two to three (i prefer three hehehe) spoons of chocolate powder in a pan.....cook it, never forget to mix it constantly with a spoon, till the milk gets a rough consistence and does not fall from the spoon....wait for it to cool, and later after putting some butter in your hand, make little (or big) balls and cover them with chocolate....You can always forget...
That´s a good and cheap option for breakfast: fruits.Brazil is blessed when it comes to fruits...Bananas for example grow along the road, and there are many types of bananas...big, medium, small. "Banana-maçã" (which i think is the best hehehe), "banana-prata", "banana-nanica"...Not to mention mangos, huge avocados, pineapples, and others difficult to find outside Brazil....like papaya, goiaba, pitanga and caju...Papaya is a typical tropical american fruit, very sweet, it has a fragile cover, the fruit itself is very easy to eat....the best papaya is the smallest one, that you can eat with a spoon...there are some black seeds in the middle of the papaya...don´t eat them they don´t taste good...Caju is more common in the northeast, the fruit itself is not good for eating but the juice is very nice, and the toasted caju nuts are wonderful. You can buy bags of them for a cheap...
"Caipirinha" is the most famous drink from Brazil.....it´s very simple to make, all you need is some lemmons, sugar, ice and the destiled drink from the cane, that has many names but the most common are "aguardente" or "cachaça". Caipirinha is a very fresh, cool drink, usually most consumed at the beach or with "feijoada", another typical plate...About "cachaça", you can buy it along the country, but every state has a different way to do it...one interesting thing is what the people from the northeast do....they berry the destiled drink on the sand, inside a cocconut (then it´s called "coquinho") or a ceramic bottle for some time...There are also shakes with cachaça and passion fruit, kiwi or cocconut you will find for sale at the beach..."Cachaçarias" are pubs specialized in selling cachaça, in all kinds of ways...they usually serve many interesting typical drinks, and a welldone...
