Local Drink Type: Caldo de Cana: Sweetest Drink You Will Ever Find

by glabah

Caldo de Cana is a drink made from sugar cane. Typically, the sugar cane stalks are frozen for storage. Then, when it is time to make the drink, the stalks are run through a grinder to extract a very cold juice from the cane. The name basically translates to "Cider of Cane".Obviously, this drink is extremely sweet, and should not be attempted by those who are sugar-intolerant!You will find Caldo de Cana in many places in Brazil, but typically it is available from road-side or sidewalk vendors, or other small sales booths in public places. It is also sold in some of the smaller restaurants. The road-side stands tend to use gasoline powered grinders to make the caldo de cana (as shown here) but if sold in a restaurant or other fixed location it is usually an electric grinder.

'Aprador' & 'Mama na Egua'

by Andreas_Fran

In Parati (4 hours from Rio) a must is 'Arpoador' restaurant with live music, good atmosphere and excellent menu. Don't miss it. As well as 'Al Carmo' Italian restaurant at Pelourinho Salvador and for a resonable price there is a kilo restaurant 'Cafe & Cia' in Ouro Preto with an amazing deversity of cheese. In Jericoacoara on Rua Principal 'Mama na Egua' serve delicious good-value seafood and at 3 o'clock in the morning visit 'a padaria do Seu Antônio' the baker shop for a warm bread and coffee. Moqueca de Peixe (Fish with shrimp in coconut & tomato sauce), a must in 'Arpoador'.Also take a taste tour with 'coxinha de galinha', 'empadinha de palmito', 'acaraje com vatapa'... Drink 'caldo de cana'(cane sugar) and of course Antartica beer.

Por Kilo

by worldcam

A great deal for lunch in Brazil are the por kilo restaurants. Typically with many different types of food available, your plate is weighed after each trip to the buffet. At the end of your meal, you pay up and have a nice day. Be sure to go before about 1400 though as lunch is over at about that time. The por kilo buffet includes many typical Brazilian dishes -- from the BBQ meat to the beans and rice and much much more.

Montana Grill: Pass the Meat.....

by worldcam

BBQ's, Churrascaria's, are big in Brazil. These restaurants serve you, continuously, loads of different cuts of BBQ meats (chicken, pork, beef, and other things even) along with the typical "staples" of rice & beans, fries and salad. Montanas is a small chain created by two Brazillian singers believe it or not. There are many many Churrascarias throughout the city --- but Montana's sticks out in my mind. It has a HUGE salad bar (I mean, HUGE), the waiters are all very friendly and are interested in foreigners come in for lunch or dinner -- they will attemp to speak English with you.

Various: Foz do Iguacu

by acemj

I found some great food in the town of Foz do Iguacu. A definite recommendation is Restaurante Zaragoza, a Spanish-inspired place that features some wonderful fresh fish from the surrounding rivers. For an inexpensive meal, you should also try a sandwich and a suco (fresh juice) from Barbarela. See my Foz do Iguacu page for details.

Various: Salvador

by acemj

Salvador was my favorite place for food in Brazil. The African-influenced cuisine is spicier and richer than in other parts of the country and the seafood that is plentiful here is always fresh and delicious. Check out my Salvador da Bahia page for specific recommendations, but wherever you decide to eat, be sure to try moqueca. It is basically an African-inspired seafood stew. Much of the flavor comes from the dende oil, which has a distinctive and rich flavor and is used heavily in Bahia (the state in which Salvador is the capital).

Various: Rio suggestions

by acemj

There are plenty of good restaurants in Rio, although during my stay I didn't find anything truly exceptional or overly noteworthy. My advice is to ask the locals (the bellhops, taxi drivers and others you encounter) and of course, local VTers for their suggestions. However, I did find some excellent feijoada , the national dish of Brazil in Ipanema, so check out my Rio page for details. You should definitely try some seafood while in Rio. This photo was taken at Barril 1800 along the beach in Ipanema, where we enjoyed some great barbecued shrimp.

Take your food left away

by aeroarce

At local restaurants the portions they serve one the dishes can be huge. Eating alone I've seen three people eating from my same dish size, and I'm not one of those that eat all what they have on the plate on huge dishes. If there is a lot of food left on your plate, you can ask the waiter to pack it for taking away. One thing you can do with it if you don't want it any more is to give it to someone that would need it on the streets. they will be happy.

To any table restaurant: Take someone to eat with you!

by aeroarce

When it comes lunch or dinner time in Brazil, if you are alone you are going to loose lots of money and food, remember take always someone with you! as many of the dishes they serve are for one actually there cam eat two or in some places I show three people eating from the same size dish they where serving me!!!!so remember if you get in a restaurant and want to save food, just invite someone to accompany you.

There are every where: Food per Kilo

by aeroarce

There are lotýs of restaurants on the streets that shell the food per kilo. its like a self service but they weight what you have selected and charge you on a rate per kilo, drinks beside. Its a good way to eat cheapy and local food.
