Buffet all the way

by Interlingua

At first, Brazilian food gave me some problems: too much meat, too little variety, too much money. But after a couple of days, I got around to going to a lunch buffet. It was like Alice in Wonderland. How could so much good food be so cheap? It just seemed topsy-turvy. For just 4 or 5 reis, you got a platefull of food. Beef stew, grilled chicken, a dozen tropical fruits, rice, bread, salad, sausage and eggs, fruit juices, and lots of things I'll let you use a dictionary to understand (farofa, maracujá). Just remember that many of these buffets close at 2:30 or 3:00 and often are not open on the weekends. But be sure to make a buffet your restaurant of choice and lunch your main meal of the day.

SUCO DE FRUTA

by swesn

FRUIT JUICE!!This is Brazil -- it probably has the most number of different types of fruits in the whole wide world! There are many juice bars along the streets, especially in Rio de Janeiro, churning out cups and cups of juices. Some are mixed with water, or you can choose to mix it with milk or orange juice.Try something different from the board each time. The names are in Portuguese but even if you speak Portuguese, the fruits may not be recognisable to you. Some pointers :Abacaxi - PineappleAcerola - A type of cherry but it is always not available whenever I tried to orderCaju - CashewCenoura - CarrotGoiaba - GuavaGraviola - Custard appleJaca - JackfruitLaranja - OrangeLimao - Lime or lemonMaca - AppleMamao - PapayaManga - MangoMaracuja - Passion fruitMelancia - WatermelonMelao - Honeydew melonMorango - strawberryPera - PearTamarindo - Plum-likeUva - Grape

BREAKFAST BUFFETS

by swesn

Many hostels and hotels in Brazil serve breakfast, which is usually included in the price of the room. And I must say, the Brazilians serve the most sumptuous breakfast in my entire trip. There is a WONDERFUL SPREAD of bread, jam, butter, biscuits, various types of tarts and little cakes, fruits like pineapple, papaya, banana, hot flasks for tea, coffee, hot milk, etc...Make the MOST of it!

Bob's: Hamburger...Fast - food chain

by Alless

Bob's is acknowledged nationwide in Brazil as a company that sells quality food products with the taste that Brazilians love. Innovation, creativity and quality: These characteristics have distinguished Bob's since the early 1950s, when it was founded by Wimbledon tennis champion Robert "Bob" Faulkenburg. At that time, Brazil was not yet acquainted with the fast food concept, but Bob saw the potential for success in the bustling city of Rio de Janeiro. In 1951, Bob founded Faulkenburg Sorvetes, Ltda., a company that specializing in the sale of machine-made vanilla ice cream created from North American recipes. Encouraged by his friends, Bob opened his first restaurant on Domingos Ferreira Street in 1952. It was there, in the Rio de Janeiro neighborhood of Copacabana, that Bob's first introduced Brazilians to hot dogs, hamburgers, milkshakes and sundaes.By the end of the 1950s, Bob's was...

MacDonald's in Brazil: world chain fast-food,, is top

by Alless

McDonald’s Brazil has built a winning path along its 22 years in the country. The Brazilian chain is McDonald’s eighth largest market worldwide. For the third consecutive year,in 2000 McDonald’s Brazil was awarded with the Franchising Hallmark of Quality by the Brazilian Franchising Association (ABF). Franchisees’ satisfaction with the company is crucial for this achievement. A research conducted by McDonald’s in the beginning of 2000, showed that 84% of the Brazilian franchisees would like to have one more McDonald’s restaurant. Currently, the 150 franchisees of McDonald’s Brazil hold 53% of the 530 restaurants spread throughout the country’s 8.5 million square kilometers. In addition to the Hallmark of Quality, McDonald’s Brazil has received in 2000 three other equally important acknowledgments. Exame magazine, the country’s leading business publication, has chosen McDonald’s as the...

BIFE COM ARROZ E FEIJAO

by swesn

This is beef steak with rice and black beans (the Brazilian's favourite), sometimes with manioc flour sprinkled over the beans. This is almost ALWAYS the selection for 'PLACA DO DIA' (Plate of the Day). The beef steak is thin, dry and salty. Nothing juicy or delicious. Miles away from Argentinian's 'bife'.
