    Paraty, the old center
    by perfectly_zen, 3 more photos
If you are coming to Rio, you should include Paraty in your list of places to visit....located for about an hour away from Rio, in BR101, it´s an amazing little town, considered to be a great historical patrimonium.
Paraty was founded in 1600, as a harbour to send the gold produced from the mines of Ouro Preto, in Minas Gerais, to Portugal. It´s the final city in the ancient "Caminho do Ouro" (=Gold route), an old road constructed by slaves during the portuguese empire, that exists till today and cross the mountains rang till the state of Minas Gerais.
With the end of the gold trade, the city was completely abandoned for many years, being occupied only by local commerciants and the brazilian massonerie...The abandonement for so much time and the lack of grouth managed to maintain the city in its original ancient architecture. We could say the city was rediscovered some years ago, with the construction of the route BR101 (since before it could only be reached by boat or the dangerous old road from Cunha).
Paraty is very magical....when you walk along the city center, you have the impression to go back in time, since the old houses are in very good shape and even the street pavement is conserved, made out of stones, which was at the time a great engineering plan.
The major attractions are hte view of the city from the road side, the old church, the old emperor´s house, as well as many museums, shops for typical handcrafts and amazing restaurants. Every night in Rua do Comercio, there´s a little fair for typical handcrafts, cheaper than inside the stores, selling native necklaces, ear rings etc...

Brazil is quite famous for its annual carnaval, an event that is celebrated almost all over the country, with substantial differences regarding the type of music or the level of madness of the party. The three main spots are : Rio de Janeiro, Olinda/Recife, and Salvador.

    1- Rio
Rio is famous for its official Samba contest that takes place in the Sambodrome, a large avenue sided by terracings from where you can see parading thousands of costumed people. The event spreads on 4 nights in total, the 1st being for `low-budget` samba schools, the 2nd and 3rd for the big schools, the last night being the big final. The samba music here is very specific to Rio (big batteria percusions).

The entrance can be quite expensive, especially if you buy it from a tourist agency! You'd be better of buying it in the street, at one of the sector entances of the sambodrome but beware of fake entrance badges... (needless to say it's better to speak portuguese or have brazilian friends negociating for you). It's best to avoid the sectors located at the very extremities of the avenue (1, 6, 13) which are the cheapest but offers a bad view .

Well, once in the place, you stay seated or can have a little bit of a samba dance, but bear in mind that you will more appreciate the beauty of the show than being part it... Except if you parade, which I higly recommend!!! To do so, you need to buy in advance a costume at one of the samba schools office (around 400Reais) - if you have trouble buying one, then go and look for a small budget school, some of them even allow you to bring your own small fantasia. Then, you'll really enjoy the craziness of the show!

Rio is not popular for its street carnaval, however the number of street parades have been increasing in the last 2 years, especially in the Santa Theresa area, but do not expect to find an atmosphere similar to the one you'll definitely embrace in option 2...

Bahian cuisine is a treasure. The cooking style is the combination of native south american, african, and european styles. This is fusion food that has been around since the days of colonization. The use of manjioca (AKA - aipim, cassava, yucca, tapioca, manioc, etc.) has reached the apex of versatility in Bahian cooking. It is a staple that is prepared hundreds of ways, including the filling for the acarajé, which is the Braziliian answer to the hot dog. A street food, it is a sandwich whose bun is made from a paste from the feijão fradinho (type of white bean) flour molded into the shape of a small bun and deep fried in dendê oil (special and very heavy type of palm oil), and filled with vatapá (a spicy mixture containing manioc and shrimp) or pirão (another spicy mixture containing manioc and shrimp), and diced tomatoes and onions, dried shrimp, and pimenta malagueta (very hot peppers). I am not a chef, and I may have confused some of the ingredients, but I am absolutely certain that these are excellent street food, especially when washed down with some choppe (Brazilian draft beer). Note - The photograph also shows street sweets like coconut candy.

  • In the road Rio-Santos (BR101) - Brazil
    In the road Rio-Santos

This road is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the country. With a legth of about 500 km, it connects two important coastal cities in Brazil: the charming Rio, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and Santos, with the most important harbour, receiving ships from every parts of the globe, in the state of São Paulo.
The code for this road is BR101....the reat thing about it is not only the economical development it brought or the region, but also the fact that it contours the mountain range called Serra do Mar (=Sea range), a place where there are the most beautiful beaches and part of what´s left of the local rain forest.
From one side of it, there will be the old mountains covered with dense forest and on the other, amazing views of the coast....
The conditions and infrastructure of this road are quite good, except for the fact that it will cross some cities, demanding a bit of patience from the drivers....but it´s worth it...
From Rio, on this road you can get to Itacuruçá, Mangaratiba, Angra dos Reis, Parati, Ubatuba, Caraguatatuba, Ilhabela, Maresias, São Sebastião, Bertioga, Guarujá, and many other breathtaking little beaches.......with many observation spots....

Besides the historical attractions..there is the amazing nature that surrounds Paraty....the irregular coast forms inumerous bays and secluded beaches, along with fishermen villages, the atlantic forest and the emmerald sea....
Cepilho - one of the first beaches in the access to the village of Trindade, 30 km away from Paraty. It?s a small beach, with white sand, with strong tide and separated by huge vulcanic rocks.
Praia do Meio - calm tide, has a spot for observation of the coast, over a hill. It has boats to Cachada?o.
Praia de Fora - The beach that goes along the village of Trindade. Long beach, with many bars on the shore.
Cachada?o - can be accessed on trail or by boat. Famous for its natural pools. On the way you can find the beach of Figueira.
Laranjeiras - closed residential area, where you?ll find the trail to Praia do Sono, Praia dos Antigos and Praia da Ponta Negra, beautiful beaches.
Paraty-Mirim - Lovely beach. with calm waters and also a river going to the shore in one side...the access can be made by car, from the road Rio-Santos, in a little, unpaved road that goes along the forest and some farms. A long way, but worth it. On the beach you?ll find fishermen and ruins of the church Nossa Senhora da Concei??o, constructed in the seveteenth century.
Praia do Pontal - is the urban beach in paraty, righ next to the old center. Good place for a walk.
S?o Gon?alo - located 32km from Paraty, can be accessed from Rio Santos. The water is very calm and clean, with white sand. On the access from the road, you can put your car in the parking lot and cross a small river on foot to get to the beach.

    STREET DRUMMER IN SALVADOR
    by scarm
Brazil is a very rhythmic place. The music from Brazil goes way beyond Bossa Nova. The genres of Brazilian music include Samba, Axé, Pagode, Brega, Funk, Forro, Frevo, Choro, MPB(musica popular brasileira), Rock Brasileiro, Reggae Brasileiro, Pop-Rock Brasileiro, Sertaneja, and others. It seems that they are inventing new musical styles every day. In additiona, there is a keen interest in musica in spanish, english,m and italian.

There are special places that I have tound that seem to have an abundance of street music, and the best of these is the Pelourinho area in Salvador, where I took this picture. There is live music to be found any night of the week, and the backdrop of the old city, constructed in the 1600's is fabulous.

Just try to keep still when the beats start, and if you can, try to catch a show of the group OLODUM. Read more about OLODUM at this wonderful site: http://www.narin.com/olodum/

The falls are roughly 2 km southeast of the junction of the Paraná and Iquasu rivers, which form the tripartite Paraguayan, Brazilian, and Argentine border. The falls are divided between Brazil and Argentina. You should visit both sides! You need 2-3 days to see both. For photography is best in the morning on the Brazilian side and in the afternoon on the Argentine side.
