OURO PRETO : BAROQUE COLONIAL TOWN

by swesn

Declared a World Cultural Monument of the United Nations, this hilly town is charming, with red-tiled roofs everywhere, beautiful Baroque churches, twisting cobble-stoned streets and gorgeous views at each strategic point. Cast your eyes in the distance for the weird peak of Itacolomy mountain.A great place to wander and get lost among the twisting lanes and hilly streets.

OURO PRETO : ALEIJADINHO'S SCULPTURES AND CHURCHES

by swesn

Aleijadinho is an artist with the nickname 'THE LITTLE CRIPPLE'. He suffered from a disease that paralyzed his hands. He tied a hammer and a chisel to his wrists and carried on making sculptures and carvings and earned the reputation as one of the most talented Baroque artists here. His masterpieces include the Our Lady of Mount Carmo Church and the Sao Francisco Chapel in Ouro Preto.

Old Igarassu

by solopes

Being out of my plan, I visited Igarassu because, in my way to Itamaracá, the taxi driver suggested the detour. It was a good idea, not exactly because of the announced highlight (the oldest church in Brazil) but because of saint Antonio church and its museum. It's a quick visit and, you are passing nearby, I think you must also make the detour.

Copacabana Beach

by traveldave

Along with Waikiki Beach in Honolulu and Bondi Beach in Sydney, Copacabana Beach is among the best and most well-known beaches in the world. It stretches about five miles (eight kilometers) from Ponta de Copacabana to the base of Sugar Loaf Mountain. The beach culture figures prominently in the lifestyle and mystique of Rio de Janeiro. Every summer, Cariocas (residents of the city) flock to the beach by the thousands and spend as much time there as possible, sunning, swimming, surfing, playing beach volleyball, or just being seen. (Copacabana Beach is known for the tininess of its bikinis, called tangas). The beach is also the site for Umbanda rituals honoring the sea goddess Yemanjá on New Year's Eve. (Umbanda is a spiritist sect with roots in West Africa, and is practiced by many residents of Rio de Janeiro irregardless of race, wealth, or social standing. See my tip under "Local...

Armação dos Búzios - Cycling around

by ant1606

Armação dos Búzios is a quaint little town sitting on the tip of a small hilly peninsula and surrounded by numerous beaches. Rental bicycles are a good option to move around although some stretches of road are really steep and exposed to the scorching sun.Our original idea was to rent a scooter to go see the Dunas do Peró, a sand dunes complex located in between Armação dos Búzios and Cabo Frio. Unfortunately, all scooter rental companies do not allow to reach such destination. Same thing with "buggy" rentals. Due to the fast motor traffic it is not advisable to cycle, only option to reach the location is then catching the local bus heading to Cabo Frio, which stops nearby, then walk for ten minutes.

Birding Marajo Island Ilha Marajo Brasil Brazil

by vdeva

At the Pousada do Canto Frances in Soure Marajo works a man, Jedilson Figueiredo who is a birder and his email is jediguia@hotmail.com He heard from someone at the pousada or from someone else that I had been looking to find the Scarlet Ibises or the Guara. They inhabit Marajo in huge flocks and I'd taken 3 trips to Fazenda Barra Velha, near the Pousada Canto do Frances end of town to try to see them. I kept asking local people at Fazenda Barra Velha where and when they could be seen. They said I should come around 8 am or 4 pm but the flock wasn't listening. But the day before I was leaving, Jedilson asked me if I wanted to join a group of French tourists the next day to go to Fazenda Bom Jesus. I didn't even know that there was a man working at the pousada who was a birder. I said that I couldn't because the boat left to Camara and Belem when they were planning to go. Turns out I could...

Paraty - A journey through history

by ant1606

Paraty, or Parati, is a typical Potuguese colonial town and a pending UNESCO World Heritage site. It was the old port used to ship the gold mined around Ouro Preto, some 800 miles away, which was connected to Paraty by the "Caminho do Ouro" (Gold Trail) road built for the purpose. Continuous pirate attacks to the ships heading to Europe suggested the use of a new port in Rio de Janeiro - and a new road - which dictated the decline of the city during the late 1700. This has somehow preserved Paraty from development and kept it as an historical jewel. Its cobbled streets are tide-flooded for about half of their network extent. During such occurrence it's possible to walk on some elevated sidewalks although not everywhere. The low tide exposes the grid-aligned streets which remain coated with extremely slippery substance. I personally experienced it by suddenly finding myself horizontal,...

Ouro Preto - A journey through history

by ant1606

This UNESCO World Heritage site had developed to become the most important town of Minas Gerais during the gold rush age, connected to the distant commercial port of Paraty by the "Caminho do Ouro" (Gold Trail) road. Revolutionary ideas that took shape here didn't go too far and basically ended with the execution of the leader, nicknamed Tiradentes, on the gallows in the homonym main square. The historical city center hasn't changed much since and features fine examples of Baroque style buildings and churches.Free-admission Casa dos Contos, where gold tax was collected, is an interesting building and museum. It's also worth seeing the Mina da Passagem, the most generous gold mine in the entire area, which still holds gold although too costly to be extracted. From Ouro Preto's main square, Praça Tiradentes, take the bus to Mariana and stop just west of the nearby town of Mariana, a small...
