Sao Paulo

by acemj

Though, I didn't get beyond the confines of the airport in Sao Paulo, flying over this megapolis is truly amazing. It's the world's third largest city and it seemingly stretches on forever when seen from the sky. I met a couple people from Sao Paulo ( Paulistas ) in Rio and it quickly became obvious that there is a competitive rivalry between the two cities that extends beyond the football pitch. Much like the New York-Los Angeles rivalry, the residents of each city can spend hours boasting about the merits of their own hometown and downplaying the highlights of their rival. From what I've heard, Sao Paulo is a bustling urban city with people who are more business-minded and some nightlife which is among the best in Brazil.

Pelourinho

by acemj

Pelourinho, sometimes referred to as Centro Historico or Cidade Alta, is the historic and cultural center of Salvador. It is a true pleasure to stroll through its hilly, cobblestone streets and admire the colorful architecture that is well-preserved from the 16th and 17th century colonial periods when Salvador was one of the richest places in all of the Americas. You'll find all the souvenirs and crafts you could ever want, more gilded surfaces that you can imagine and some of the best plates of food in all of Brazil.

Watching over . . . .

by acemj

The Christ the Redeemer statue sits atop Corcovado mountain in Rio and to me, represents an interesting irony. The beautiful Art Deco statue stands as if blessing the city below and is certainly emblematic of the country's Catholic roots. Officially, Brazil is 70% Catholic, but when I went out at night, I guess I was surrounded by the other 30%!!! When you think about the hedonism that Rio represents to much of the world, it's ironic to look up and see the statue that gracefully tops Corcovado.

Igaucu Falls

by WanderingKiwi

Located on the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, these waterfalls are a must see! A river up to 2.5km wide seemingly falls off the face of the earth into this natural ravine creating the most picturesque and tranquil wonderland ever seen. Visible from both the Brazilian and Argentinian side of the border, I would recommend staying in the Brazilian town of Foz do Iguacu and travelling by bus or taxi to the more spectacular Argentinian side of the falls

Caetano Veloso

Caetano Veloso was born in Salvador da Bahia in 1942; he is another of the most famous Brazilian musicians, and probably the most exquisite one."I respect a lot my tearsBut even more my laughI write like this my wordsIn the voice of a sacred woman...""Vaca Profana" (Profane Cow)Caetano Veloso nació en Salvador da Bahia en 1942; es otro de los más famosos músicos brasileños, y probablemente el más exquisito."Respeito muito minhas lágrimasMas ainda mais minha risadaEscrevo assim minhas palavrasNa voz de uma mulher sagrada...""Vaca profana"

Vinicius de Moraes (1913-1980), lawyer, diplomat, poet, singer, bohemian... The spirit of Brazil."A woman under the sun is everything I wish. She comes from the sea, naked, with her arms crosswise, and the flower of her lips open for a kiss, and over the skin, refulgent, the pollen of the light."

MASP

Sao Paulo’s Museum of Art, the MASP (Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo) sits proudly raised two stories off the ground on bright red concrete pillars on the avenue playing host to impressive exhibitions from masters such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso and Raphael also Brazilian artists like Portinari and other great contemporary Brazilian artists’ works displayed here. There was a Renoir exhibition when I was there and it was certainly proving popular with a growing queue waiting to gain access.
